Baron Archer is a massive horse with a reputation to match after keeping an unbeaten start to his career at Caulfield on Saturday.
The Jason Warren-trained gelding, who stands more than 17 hands tall, passed his biggest test yet when he raced to his third win from as many starts in the Myrtle Lineham Centenary Plate (1400m).
Ben Melham has ridden Baron Archer, who is part-owned by Gold Coast AFL star Gary Ablett, in all three wins at Cranbourne, Sandown and now Caulfield and is convinced he is an exciting horse in the making.
"This is only his first racing preparation. He has come a long way in a short period of time," Melham said.
"If he can continue on like that, he's certainly got a bright future."
Melham says Baron Archer is the biggest horse he has ridden.
"He's a monster", he said.
The jockey was impressed the imposing galloper was able to take up a position on the fence behind the lead from barrier one in Saturday's race, then chase down Running Bull ($12) to win by a neck.
Favourite Yesterday's Songs ($2.70) settled in the second half of the field and ran on down the outside but was unable to reel in Baron Archer ($6) and Running Bull, finishing a length away third.
Melham said Baron Archer had done a great job and would be a better horse in his next preparation.
Assistant trainer Mitchell Beer, deputising for Warren who is on holidays, said they would likely back off Baron Archer and consider whether to target a spring race or wait for the autumn.
"Knowing the horse, the improvement he has got in him is still quite a lot," he said.
