Trainer Liam Birchley's gear experiment paid off with Headwater Country after the addition of blinkers saw the talented galloper score an impressive trial win at Doomben on Tuesday.

Headwater Country scored an easy 1-1/4 length win over Golden Slipper placegetter Bring Me The Maid in an 850-metre trial.

His time of 50.78secs was the second fastest of all the 850-metre trials and the quickest of the two-year-old divisions for the morning.

Headwater Country won his first start at the Gold Coast and Birchley took him to Sydney where ran third at Randwick.

The Snitzel gelding had no luck at his next three starts including the Black Opal Stakes at Canberra and the Wellington Boot.

"He was never on the track in Opal and then had no luck when fourth in the Boot despite the winner bolting in," Birchley said.

Headwater Country was spelled after the Wellington Boot and missed the Brisbane winter carnival.

Birchley is not getting carried away with the fact Headwater Country beat a Golden Slipper placegetter in Tuesday's trial but he was pleased with the effort.

"I don't know what you make of Bring Me The Maid as she was slow to go and then wasn't knocked around," he said.

"But we might have found the key to Headwater Country by putting blinkers on him. When he came back into work he was a bit doughy and I thought what is going on here," he said.

At this stage Headwater Country will have his first start this campaign in Brisbane in a three-year-old race.

"After the luck we had with him last time we went south I am in no hurry to get him back there," Birchley said.

"But if he races OK up here we might have to reconsider and take him south for some of the spring races."
