Sam Clipperton has left the ranks of apprentice riders with two farewell city wins, including one for the trainer who helped him claim two Sydney junior jockeys' titles.
On his second last day as an apprentice, Clipperton rode Martilago to victory in the Ibis Milano Restaurant Handicap for his boss Ron Quinton.
"Hopefully our partnership can blossom even more in the years to come," Clipperton said.
Clipperton outrode his allowance on the Quinton-trained All Salsa at Canterbury last week after extending his apprenticeship to coincide with the end of the racing season.
After Perfect Weapon won the Declaration Of War @ Coolmore Handicap, Clipperton finished the metropolitan season with 27 winners, 12 clear of his nearest rival on the premiership table.
As Clipperton nears the end of his time, another apprentice is just starting to generate enough interest to make her a legitimate threat in next season's title race.
Winona Costin, indentured to Gai Waterhouse at Tulloch Lodge, ended the metropolitan season with a double for outside stables at Warwick Farm.
Costin made it successive wins on the Lee Curtis-trained Cocktail Time in the Pro-Ride Handicap while Numbers ran on deepest from midfield in the straight for a clear-cut win over Lolavie and Sensualism.
Anthony Cummings lamented the loss of promising sire Hotel Grand after Mackinac Island posted the first win of her six starts in the TAB Early Quaddie Maiden Plate.
"It is always a bit disappointing to lose a stallion like Hotel Grand because he produces horses who could race on-speed, just like himself," Cummings said.
Hotel Grand won two Group One races during an abbreviated career - the 2005 Spring Champion Stakes and the 2006 Randwick Guineas - and Mackinac Island is from his last crop of foals.
