Barakey posts 11 from 11 in Winterbottom

Saturday 24 November 2012, 7:30pm

Perth star Barakey kept an unbeaten record when he delivered on the Group One stage for the first time in the $500,000 Winterbottom Stakes at Ascot on Saturday.

Extending his undefeated sequence to 11, Barakey posted the most important victory of his career by his narrowest winning margin.

He rallied from the brink for jockey Jason Brown to hold out Power Princess and Queensland sprinter Spirit Of Boom.

Trainer Jim Taylor is now likely to explore eastern states options for the sprinter who started his spree as a late-season three-year-old in June last year.

Barakey was forced to race outsider the leader Travinator when the field settled.

He was placed under immense pressure swinging for home but he was able to maintain a slender advantage to lead home a West Australian quinella in the state's premier sprint race.

Sydney sprinter Pinwheel finished fast to claim fourth after stablemate Academus had earlier provided trainer Peter Snowden and Darley with their first win in Perth .

In a genuine heart-stopper, Academus scraped home in the $350,000 Group Two WA Guineas.

Snowden went close to a Perth breakthrough last year when Rarefied finished second to Ortensia in the Winterbottom.

Racing on a strong tempo, Academus established a commanding lead at the 200m mark after being left in front a long way from the finish.

When the three-year-old started to tire despite the urgings of jockey Kerrin McEvoy, the outsider Bippo No Bungus charged from the pack but missed out in a photo.

It turned out to be an Ascot redemption win for McEvoy who lost last year's Railway Stakes on protest after his mount He's Remarkable was first across the line.
