Yeager breaks through to justify promise

Saturday 2 August 2014, 1:49pm

Jockey Jim Byrne marvelled at the raw ability of promising three-year-old Yeager after the pair scored a runaway win at Eagle Farm on Saturday.

"He has a lot learn but he has a stack of talent," said Byrne after Yeager's win in the Queensland Breeders TBQA Handicap (1600m).

Yeager, the $1.85 favourite, stormed home along the fence to beat Sleep Tight ($3.80) by 1-1/4 lengths with Bradbury's Gold ($13) a long head back in third.

Trainer Tony Gollan has a big opinion of Yeager who he has already earmarked for next year's winter carnival.

"Yeager will go for a spell on Monday then we will bring him back for the summer three-year-old features here in Brisbane," Gollan said.

"But I don't think you will see the best of him until the next winter carnival."

Yeager has been a handful at the barriers at his previous starts but pleased Gollan with his behaviour on Saturday.

"He had a few things against him. But his barrier manners were a lot better today. Also a few people thought he was badly weighted as a maiden with top weight of 59 kilos," Gollan said.

"But that is just the way things are at this time of the year. He is a big strong horse and he handled the weight well."

Yeager cost $85,000 as a yearling and is owned by a syndicate which includes Gollan's wife Jane and well-known bookmaker Wayne Gannon.

Meanwhile, former Victorian galloper Rock Musician ($16) continued to respond to a return to using senior riders when he won the Signature Refinish Handicap (2125m).

"Rock Musician had a high rating when he came up from Melbourne and we had to use apprentices on him. But he is an old gelding and he goes better for senior riders as you saw today," said trainer Bradley Smith.

Byrne rode Rock Musician at his previous start when second at Ipswich and Michael Hellyer had the ride on Saturday.
