Speed Baby continues domination in Malaysia
Fastnet Rock gelding Speed Baby continued the domination of Australian bred gallopers in Malaysia’s feature races when he ran out the victor of the Malaysian Group 1 Coronation Cup (1600m) at the Perak Turf Club in Ipoh on Sunday.
Speed Baby ($280,000 2008 Easter, 6g Fastnet Rock-Twisted Heart) carried top weight of 57kgs in the this year’s RM700,000 Coronation Cup, but the heavy impost could not stop the galloper from recording his fourth win at the highest level on the Malaysian Racing Association circuit. Fox Command (by Testa Rossa), Good Baby (by Hussonet) and Good Sight (by Lonhro) were the next three over the line.
Australian bred gallopers make up 55% of runners in Malaysia, but they have been dominant at the highest levels with 89% of stakes races run in country in the last three years having been won by a horse carrying the AUS suffix, such as Speed Baby.
Bred by Ron Dufficy, T J & J A Hughes Racing, Speed Baby (pictured as yearling) was purchased by C P Beh for $280,000 from the draft of Yarraman Park Stud at the 2008 Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale.
Sunday’s victory took the Baby Stable owned galloper’s racetrack earnings to the equivalent of A$902,000. Amongst his previous eight victories on the MRA circuit were the 2010 Coronation Cup (1600m), 2011 Singapore Group 1 Patron's Bowl (1600m) and Malaysian Group 1 Piala Emas Sultan Selangor (2000m) in June 2012.
