Former Hong Kong champion Good Ba Ba has won a barrier trial at Cranbourne ahead of a possible start in the Standish Handicap at Flemington on New Year's Day.
A three-time winner of the Hong Kong International Mile and the 2008 Horse of the Year, Good Ba Ba was retired last year.
Horses in Hong Kong are not allowed to race beyond the age of 10 and the owner sent the 11-year-old to Rick Hore-Lacy with a view to resurrecting his career.
His first Australian appearance was a five-length win in a 1000m trial on the synthetic track on Monday with Craig Newitt aboard.
Hore-Lacy said the Group Three Standish (1200m) looked an ideal starting point.
"It's hard to get a gauge on him because the horses he was up against weren't of a very high class, but he certainly looked the goods when he stretched out in the straight," Hore-Lacy told racingvictoria.net.au.
"He's got a huge stride and I thought he was very impressive.
"We'll probably give him another trial in a couple of weeks and then look at starting him off in the Standish on New Year's Day at Flemington."
