This is an outstanding filly by a wonderful young sire in Capitalist out of a mare by our best broodmare sire in Encosta De Lago bred at one of our very best studs. Reads pretty well doesn’t it.
I loved this filly from the moment I inspected her. She is the 2nd Capitalist filly I’ve purchased with duel winner Gerety being the first. I’m certain the key to Capitalist is to send a well-built mare to him. I’ve noticed at this sale the fillies by him are stronger than in the past.
This filly is a lovely moving filly with an attractive head and she is very strong behind. She looks like a 2yo to me and as an early September foal will be given her chance to run at the Magic Millions next year.
She will really suit Tom Dabernig who has terrific experience in preparing early 2yo’s.
I have purchased some great fillies over the years from the Gold Coast Magic Millions Sale including Flying Jess, Hijack Hussy, Seonee, Xtremetime, Calming, Huiskes, Hidden Wonder, Greenmount Belle and Calming Influence. Could this be the nest one?
Capitalist
Capitalist was a wonderful looking yearling and went on to be an outstanding 2yo winning the ATC Breeders Plate on debut and then the Magic Millions Gold Coast 2yo Classic before winning the jewel in the crown the ATC Group 1 Golden Slipper Stakes, Australia’s best 2yo race. He was retired to stud after just seven starts.
Capitalist went on with it when he went to stud being the Leading First Season Sire for winners as well as having the most stakes winners. He had the equal most 2yo winners against all comers with Snitzel and also equal most stakes winners with I Am Invincible. He was in pretty good company.
In his second season he had the most winners on the Second season Sires List with 72. This was 20 ahead of his nearest rival, Shalaa.
He is currently the Leading 3rd Season Sire in Australia with a whopping 139 winners. This sees him lead the field by 53 wins ahead of Shalaa again.
Importantly, he is in 12th place on the Australian Sire’s General List up from 28th last year. He is a very good young sire indeed.
Domesticated
Domesticated is by the Champion Broodmare Sire Encosta De Lago. What an amazing influence he has had on our industry. He has been the leading or in second place on the broodmare list for the best part of the last decade and his battles with Redoute’s Choice are legendary.
I need to point out Alligator Blood is out of an Encosta De Lago mare but so are another 19 Group 1 winners with 287 Stakes horses in total out of his daughters. He works well with Capitalist with eight individual winners already and with Written Tycoon 11 winners.
Baramul Stud
Baramul Stud is one of our best. It is owned by Gerry Harvey and I’d hate to think how many winners it has produced. The stud has a grand history dating back to 1940 when it was established. Gerry has bred and raced some of the best horses in Australia with one of his big guns being Champion Sire Savabeel as well as current WFA star Alligator Blood.
I have had good success buying from Baramul with the stakes horses Lord Monty and Reneged being the best. I also bought Hoop and Fromage from Gerry. These two mares have been great success stories at stud with Fromage producing the Group 1 winner Marscarpone and Hoop producing just the one foal Hasseltoff the winner of over $400,000 trained by Tom Dabernig.
The Trainer
The first horse I sent Tom was Double Rock who had been having issues jarring up on the firm tracks we had to put up with during the drought. The mare has matured and really blossomed in the great environment at Warrnambool. First up she finished a close second to a smart galloper and backed this up with two more second placings and then a strong win, which she richly deserved. It is important mares win a race before going to stud and Tom achieved this goal.
It didn’t take Tom long to get us off the mark with our 2nd runner Tillotson scoring twice, firstly at Stawell and then at Moonee Valley in Saturday company where she ran a class record. She is a little high strung and had been struggling being trained at Randwick which is an incredibly busy environment with Warrnambool being a perfect fit for her.
I moved Embeller to Tom with the aim being getting ‘Black Type’ which is so important for mares going forward as breeders. Tom almost pulled off a great training performance with Embeller running a close 2nd in the Group 3 Bow Mistress Stakes first up for him. He got the mare the valuable ‘Black Type’ we were chasing. Only bad luck cost us the win. She was then retired and I look forward to inspecting her yearlings in due course.
Tom then stepped out a 3yo filly named Whistlefield winning her maiden impressively and running two nice races in the city from just three starts.
We now have eight horses with Tom and I’m thrilled with the way he handles his horses. He is an outstanding communicator and his attention to detail is second to none..
