I was surprised with this crop of yearlings by Capitalist. This is his second crop, in my opinion a better crop overall than his first crop. Capitalist was an impressive racehorse winning the two big 2yo races, The Golden Slipper and Gold Coast Magic Millions 2YO Classic. These races are stallion making races and Capitalist has been given every chance to make it at stud.


He is currently 2nd on the Australian First season Sire’s List and has been represented by some impressive types already. The fact he has five ‘Black Type’ performers to his credit augers well for the future. All five of the stake’s horses are colts.


He also leads the NZ First Season Sires List although he has had just the two runners. He is also holding down 2nd place on the 2yo List in NZ.


This colt caught my eye at the sales but to be honest I expected him to fetch upwards of $250,000 so I initially didn’t have him vetted. When he was passed in, I had him vetted immediately with Tim Roberts highly recommending him to me after he vetted the horse. I secured him for $165,000 including GST which was a great result.


He is a very tidy colt, in a similar mould to Husson Eagle. He is strong and has a nice length of reign. I wouldn’t be surprised to see him get up and run at two.
His dam Istanford (USA) was a good 2yo winning twice as a juvenile. In all she won five races including the Group 2 Del Mar San Clemente Handicap and Group 3 Arlington Classic Stakes and Group 3 Del Mar Sandy Blue Handicap. She was also 2nd in the Florida Oaks.


This is Istanford’s 3rd foal. The 2nd foal, Tonneofgrit, was purchased by Hawkes Racing for $425,000 The colt was reared at Newgate Farm who have brought in some very well- bred US mares over the past couple of seasons. These mares are well related with many good race mares. It is a strategy that is working for them.


I have purchased three fillies out of imported mares from Newgate with all showing good ability. All three are at least Metropolitan class. These fillies are the winners Embeller and Wild Spree. Xtremetime who ran a terrific race in Sydney at her only start.


Istanford is by Istan whose daughters are going well at stud. It is only early days but from just 12 runners they have produced 7 winners with one stake’s horse. He couldn’t ask for a better start to his career as a broodmare sire.


This colt goes to Patrick Payne who has had five colts race that we syndicated with him for five winners. These five cost $242,500 combined and have won 19 races and returned $1,865,341 in stakes money. Four are still in our racing team.
