SYNDICATORS COMMENTS.

“He’s a horse with amazing presence and a powerful sprinter’s physique,” Newgate’s Henry Field said. “When a horse like Deep Field comes along and shows the highly desirable attributes of brilliant, record breaking speed, good temperament and physical type to match his impressive pedigree, he has to be a massive chance to follow in the footsteps of his sire Northern Meteor.”

“I’ve been chasing him since he broke his maiden by 10 lengths,” Field said. “I reckon I was the first person to call (owner) Alan Bell and say this is an incredible horse, so we’ve been there from the get-go.”

Deep Field was the most expensive first crop son of Northern Meteor, making $440,000 at Easter 2012 from the Edinglassie Stud draft, and his Caulfield Guineas-Gr.1-winning brother Shooting to Win (four wins, $996,000) made $160,000 the following year at the Gold Coast. Their dam Listen Here, a Listed winner of three races from 1000m-1400m, was a $150,000 Easter Yearling in 2006 and is by Sepoy’s sire Elusive Quality (Gone West) from the unraced Announce (by the Sir Tristram classic winner Military Plume (NZ) from Theme Song (NZ) by Sackford (USA)) whose five foals to race all won. Deep Field is inbred to Mr. Prospector 5f,4mx4m and has Northern Dancer 4mx5m and is line bred to Sir Ivor.

Announce is a half-sister to Gr.1 winner Emerald Dream (Danehill (USA)), dam of stakes winners Knight’s Command and Zabene, and to Listed winner and sire Special Bond (by Northern Meteor’s grandsire Fairy King (USA)). Theme Song is a half-sister to multiple Gr.1 winner and sire Danewin and to Gr.1 placed sire Commands (both by Danehill) and they are from Cotehele House (GB) (My Swanee-Eight Carat (GB) by Pieces of Eight), a half-sister to Gr.1 winners Octagonal (Zabeel), Kaapstad (Sir Tristram), Mouawad (Zabeel) and Our Marquise (Gold and Ivory).

Horse of the Year Octagonal is sire of multiple Gr.1 winner, Horse of the Year and Champion Sire Lonhro. Eight Carat, a half-sister to champion sprinter Habibti, is from Klairessa (Klairon-Courtessa by Supreme Court) and traces to the flying Mumtaz Mahal (family 9c), his 11th dam. Lonhro daughters could prove valuable mates for Deep Field with Octagonal and Announce sharing similar breeding.

Deep Field’s sire, the short-lived Ascot Vale Stakes-Gr.1 winner Northern Meteor, also hails from thoroughbred royalty, his female line tracing to Rough Shod (his fourth dam), a line responsible for the likes of Sadler’s Wells and his brother Fairy King (grandsire of Northern Meteor), Perugino (sire of Testa Rossa), Nureyev, Thatch and Ridan. His second dam Scuff (Forli-Moccasin by Nantallah) is a sister in blood to Thatch and Lisadell (dam of Yeats) and a half-sister to Apalachee and Brahms (USA). Third dam Moccasin (Nantallah-Rough Shod by Gold Bridge) is a sister to Ridan (sire) and Thong (third dam of Fairy King and Sadler’s Wells and second dam of Nureyev).

Northern Meteor, who died in July 2013 and left about 460 foals in his four crops, was the Leading First Crop Sire of 2012-13 and his runners include the Golden Rose-Gr.1 and Coolmore (Ascot Vale) Stakes-Gr1, winner Zoustar (dam by Redoute’s Choice), BRC T.J. Smith-Gr.1 winner Romantic Touch (Snippets), Canterbury Stakes-Gr.1 winner Cosmic Endeavour (Danehill (USA)), Caulfield Guineas-Gr.1 winner Shooting to Win (Elusive Quality (USA)), Gr.2 winner and Gr.1 runner-up Eurozone (Don’t Say Halo (USA)), Gr.2 winner Bound For Earth (Belong to Me (USA)) and Magic Night-Gr.2 winner Speak Fondly (Flying Spur), a filly inbred 4fx3m to Rolls (USA) (Mr. Prospector), second dam of Encosta de Lago and dam of Flying Spur. Zoustar and Eurozone are already at stud, the former at Widden/Woodside Park and the latter covered his first book at Newgate Farm in 2014, looking after 167 mares at $13,750.

Northern Meteor is by Gr.1 winner and Champion Sire Encosta de Lago (Fairy King (USA)-Shoal Creek by Star Way (GB)), another from a peerless female line as his fourth dam is the Gr.1 winner and top class producer Fanfreluche (Northern Dancer) whose Australian descendants also include Golden Slipper winner and sire Flying Spur.

While the latest of now-pensioned Encosta de Lago’s 23 Gr.1 winners is powerhouse grey sprinter Chautauqua, he has also left Lashed, Princess Coup Sacred Kingdom, Alinghi, Racing to Win, Sirmione, Puccini, Manhattan Rain and Mnemoysne among more than 1000 winners (105SW).

While Northern Meteor was a standout son at stud for Widden, Arrowfield’s young sire Manhattan Run is enjoying a great season with his first crop three year-olds, Golden Slipper runner-up Von Costa de Hero is showing promise at Darley, while Delago Brom and Delzao, conceived from more modest mares when the horse first went to stud in Victoria, also made their mark.

Deep Field, raced by Allan Bell in partnership with Ananda Krishnan’s Kia-Ora Stud, warmed up for racing with a barrier trial win over 890m on June 10, 2014 and stepped out 10 days later for a 10-length debut win over 1100m at Gosford, running 1:04.16 on a dead track and then won at Canterbury over 1100m (1:03.18) by 4.5 lengths. The win prompted trainer John Hawkes to say the talented colt needed to learn to switch off. “He’s got a great turn of foot and a really bright future, but we need to concentrate on his education so he learns to switch off,” he said.

Put away until September 16 that year when he easily won another Sydney trial, he really had racegoers talking at his third start on September 24. That day he broke the Canterbury track record for 1100m, running 1:03.04, carrying 58kg and beating Loceano by 5.5 lengths. Deep Field took on stakes company at Randwick next start (October 18), winning the $100,000 Lightning Handicap-LR by three lengths for trainers Michael, Wayne and John Hawkes, beating That’s a Good Idea and Shamalia. Deep Field scored his most important win at Flemington on November 1, beating Driefontein by a length in the Linlithgow Stakes-Gr.2 (1200m), running the straight course in 1:11.05.

He tackled Gr.1 company for the first time when resuming on February 21 this year, running third behind Lankan Rupee and Brazen Beau in the VRC Lightning Handicap (1000m), beaten 3.2 lengths. He was narrowly beaten when runner-up to Target in Sight in the Maurice McCarten Stakes (1100m) at Rosehill (soft) on March 14 and was retired after an unplaced run in the Galaxy-Gr.1 at Randwick on March 21. His record is five wins, a second and a third in eight starts for earnings of $390,300.

Alan Bell has few regrets about Deep Field going to stud without a Gr.1 win beside his name. Bell and fellow owner Ananda Krishnan had always intended to send Deep Field to stud this year and have kept shares in the young stallion.

The Colt purchased is also without doubt the most well-bred yearling that I have ever purchased at a Yearling sale. The dam Scorpio Queen is a Winner of 5 races and was a dual STAKESWINNER herself and twice placed at GROUP 3 level. She carries the famous Danehill/Royal Academy cross that we have had so much success with in the past with horses of the calibre of LE BONSIR (who Mick says this colt reminds him very much of!),LOVEYAMADLY,DAMSELFLY etc. who were ALL GROUP and STAKES level performed horses for United Syndications that ALL carried that exact same cross. The Northern Meteor/Danehill cross that this colt is blessed with is also the exact same cross as ZOUSTAR,COSMIC ENDEAVOUR and SPEAK FONDLY-ALL GROUP 1 Winners here in Australia- and is Northern Meteor’s most successful and proven nick to date! The Second Dam LYFORD has had 6 foals to race for 6 winners ALL City performed gallopers,4 of which won in town whilst La Speciale AND Royale Harmony were both placed in town with the later going on to run 4th in the GROUP 1 VRC OAKS and GROUP 2 VRC WAKEFUL STAKES. The Colt directly descends from a TRULY outstanding galloper (and one of my all-time favourites) in TOLEDO who was a winner of 8 races including the GROUP 1 Newmarket Hcp,GROUP 1 MVRC Australia Stakes, GROUP 1 QTC Stradbroke Hcp as well as multiple GROUP 1,2 AND 3 placings-a truly outstanding galloper he was!

As everyone can no doubt tell I am so excited to have purchased this Colt (as is Mick who I have never seen so quite excited before in a video)who has such an outstanding pedigree and who is by one of THE most exciting stallions to stand in Australia for some time and topping it all is off is that he is a home grown Classic Australian Colonial stallion typical of the Australian Stallions that have stood the test of time and clearly stand above all in success generated! We welcome this colt and proud for him to be coming under the United Syndications banner!
