Racing fans need no introduction to the sire of Grand’s latest NZ bred staying filly. DUNDEEL is the exciting first season stallion who retired from racing in 2014 a six-time Group 1 winner with over $5.3million in prizemoney, but only after spending 2 seasons demolishing the best middle distance horses Australia could produce.
Few horses are capable of progressing from a New Zealand 2YO maiden win to Sydney 3YO Group 1 success in five starts. But the exceptional son of HIGH CHAPARRAL did it within six months in 2012, culminating with victory in the ATC Spring Champion S. G1. Then in the autumn of 2013 he made history. Clean sweeping all four Group 1 3YO races in Sydney. He won the G1 Australian Derby by 6 lengths in devastating fashion, running his final 400 metres faster than world champion sprinter Black Caviar in the 1200-metre T.J. Smith Stakes on the same day! That victory saw him ranked as the 2nd best middle distance 3yo in the world, behind only (and fittingly) RULER OF THE WORLD. As a 4yo he returned to defeat the previously unbeaten ATLANTIC JEWEL in the Group 1 MRC Underwood Stakes, and remains the only horse to ever lower her colours. He then returned to Sydney for his swansong, ending a short but amazing career with a win in the G1 Queen Elizabeth Stakes in the inaugural running of the Championships. It’s not hard to see why his first crop of yearlings have been so popular, and why Grand Syndicates had him high on their list of stallions to target at the yearling sales.
Our filly is the first foal from the 3-time winning and well-related Anniversary Jewel, a multiple city-placed granddaughter of DANEHILL and half sister to a massive 10 winners including the 3-time stakes-winner and G1 placed LIFE OF RILEY, as well as Listed Creswick Stakes winner ROYSTON. What we love about this NZ staying pedigree is that it’s a page full of winners at a high strike-rate throughout, with Anniversary Jewel’s first 3 dams producing 17 winners between them from only 20 runners; an 85% strike-rate. Couple that with the strength and dominance of NZ bred stayers in Australia and this filly ticks plenty of the boxes we went looking for.
On type, she a lovely, leggy and athletic filly that looks perfect to get over ground and stretch out to a staying journey like her dad. She’s a great mover and very relaxed, which was something that caught our eye through inspections and had us coming back to her again and again. To be trained by leading NSW trainer Brett Cavanough at Scone, we were incredibly lucky to be able to secure this filly at a price to be able to offer her at $2,200 a share. With Grand’s “no stress” fixed fees at $6.60 a day budgeted to cover all costs, this filly looks an excellent staying opportunity from an exciting you sire and NZ staying family. Don’t miss her!
