This young stayer has a lot of potential, and looks like he will run up to 3200m. He handles wet and dry tracks and he has scope for further improvement. He was purchased from the October 2014 Tattersalls Horses in Training Sale and is now in full-training at Lindsay Park, Euroa.
This colt had an excellent three year old season in 2014. His trainer discovered the key to him when putting the winkers on for his fourth start this year when he finished strongly and ran a very good 2nd (beaten a neck) over 2000m at Pontefract in July 2014. There was 13 lengths back to the third placegetter. The winner, WOODACRE won again at his next start.
EPSOM HILL then stepped up in Class (and distance) to a 2400m Handicap at Thirsk (2 August) and won by 10 lengths (another 5 lengths back to 3rd). He followed that by winning again over 2700m at Newbury (3 lengths) on 15 August.
His trainer then placed him in a feature handicap (2800m Old Borough Cup at Haydock) on 6 September, where he was the only three year old in the race. He stayed on strongly to finish second, beaten a length by the impressive NAUTILUS. Despite his reputation as being a ‘wet tracker’ this race, held on a ‘Good’ track (likely closer to Dead in our rating system), was actually his highest rating performance of his career.
He is still a colt, so we have the option to geld him. He doesn’t have a commercial stallions pedigree, and despite his good form, my advisers in the UK believe there is further improvement in him as a gelding. An interesting ‘Swedish bred’ horse by Homme D’Honneur (a well-bred son of Sadler’s Wells). This colt is a half-brother to EQUIP HILL, that Champion Older Horse & Stayer in Scandinavia in 2007.
He is still a young horse (he will be classified as a 4yo in Australia), and comes out with a low rating (circa 78 in Australia) so the plan will be to race him through his classes, and develop him into a Cup’s horse.
