I have been a fan of Needs Further for many years and I have purchased four fillies and one colt by him over the years. Two of these fillies have gone on to be amongst Needs Further’s best fillies with a third being the promising filly Bine with three wins from just eight starts and $101,700 in prizemoney making her the highest earning filly from the 2022 Tasmanian Magic Millions Sale.
Needs Further only averages 24 fillies per year so there are very few on offer with quite a few of these homebred out of low quality mares. There were only four fillies on offer at this year’s Tasmanian Magic Millions Yearling Sale. This filly was easily the best of these and in my opinion the best filly in the sale.
The cross with Needs Further over Ladoni mares has been very successful with five winners including the star 2yo Pateena Arena.
These are the best result each year from the Tasmanian Magic Millions Yearling sales from 2016 through to 2022 by Needs Further fillies.
2016 Tasmanian Magic Millions Sale’s best filly Pateena Arena by Needs Further.
2017 Tasmanian Magic Millions Sale’s best horse Mystic Journey by Needs Further.
2018 Tasmanian Magic Millions Sale’s most winning filly Deroche by Needs Further.
2019 Tasmanian Magic Millions Sale’s equal most winning filly Vivilici by Needs Further.
2020 Tasmanian Magic Millions Sale’s best filly Our Heidi by Needs Further.
2021 Tasmanian Magic Millions Sale’s best filly Vokes by Needs Further.
2022 Tasmanian Magic Millions Sale’s highest earning filly Bine by Needs Further.
These results tell a great story.
Needs Further has a terrific pedigree and was a good racehorse. He is by Champion Sire Encosta de Lago out of the Danehill mare Crowned Glory which was 2nd in the Golden Slipper Stakes. Needs Further is a ½ brother to the Group 1 winner Hallowed Crown and Mornington Glory which was 3rd in this year’s Group 1 MRC Oakleigh Plate. Needs Further’s 2nd dam is by Champion sire Bletchingly with his 3rd dam the dam of Super Sire Zabeel.
Here are my results from the Tasmanian Magic Millions Sale since 2017. In total I secured six yearlings over the seven years but didn’t purchase a yearling in 2021 or 2023. I generally only purchase one yearling each year for my Tasmanian stable.
I started to become interested in the progeny of Needs Further in his first year at stud with his first yearlings sold in 2016. I didn’t purchase a filly by him but the filly out of Gehenna by Ladoni named Pateena Arena rated well and she went on to win both the Listed Elwick Stakes and Listed Gold Sovereign Stakes. She was the best 2yo in Tasmania in her year and was bred at Armidale Stud.
The first Needs Further I secured was Our Long Sali from the 2017 Tasmanian Magic Millions Yearling Sale from Armidale Stud. She was a beautiful yearling with her being knocked down to me for $32,000. She went on to win the Tasmanian Magic Millions 2yo Classic in 2018 trained by Stuart Gandy. Under Stuart’s care the filly won three of her six starts and was a gallant 6th in the Group 3 SA Sire’s Produce Stakes beaten just 1.8 lengths.
Unfortunately, Paul Geard who owned Geegee’s Stud was getting frustrated with the Prime Thoroughbreds syndicated horses beating his Geegee’s too often and stopped Stuart training horses other than those he owned. Our Long Sali was transferred to Adam Trinder who did a great job with her.
As a 3yo she was placed second in the Listed Tasmanian Guineas, Tasmanian 1000 Guineas, Listed Tasmanian Strutt Stakes and Listed Tasmanian Oaks in consecutive races. These are four of Tasmania’s biggest 3yo races. As a 4yo she ran second in the Lady Lynette and 4th in the Tasmanian 3 and 4yo Magic Millions Classic. She was a very good filly racing against and being competitive with horses of the calibre of Mystic Journey and The Inevitable. She won $180,563 on the track and was sold for $65,000 as the completion of her racing career.
Our Long Sali was the second best performed filly or mare to come out of the 2017 Magic Millions Yearling Sale after the Champion filly Mystic Journey, also by Needs Further who was a Group 1 winner of $4,182,100. Mystic Journey was a superstar. Needs Further had produced three outstanding fillies in his first two crop including the best 3YO filly in Australia in Mystic Journey. Mystic Journey was a $11,000 purchase from Armidale Stud.
I purchased Our Long Sali’s full sister at the 2018 Tasmanian Magic Millions Yearling Sale but while she was a beautiful filly was very limited.
The next filly I purchased by Needs Further was Vivilici from the 2019 Magic Millions Yearling Sale. Her best win was in the Tasmanian 3YO Trophy. She was purchased from Armidale Stud’s draft at the Tasmanian Magic Millions Sale for $35,000 and is the equal most winning filly or mare to come from the sale.
Vivilici has been a great mare for her owners winning seven races and $172,972 in stakes money. She is still racing.
I purchased two colts at the 2020 Tasmanian Magic Millions sale from the Armidale Stud draft with Needs Remembering being by Needs Further and won two races. While he was no star, he had some ability. He cost $55,000 and has returned $78,155 in stakes money. He is no longer in our racing team.
The other colt I purchased from this sale was the Tasmanian Derby winner The Nephew who cost $40,000 and has returned $318,000 with five wins to his credit. He is still in our racing team and is the second highest earning horse to come out of the sale.
In 2022 I purchased Bine from the Magic Millions National Sale for $20,000. She had been sold earlier in the year at the 2022 Tasmanian Magic Millions Yearling Sale but was resold at the National Sale. She is a promising filly with three wins from just eight starts and $101,700 in stakes earnings. She is still in our racing team.
I’m thrilled to have purchased this filly from the Armidale Stud draft. She looks an early type and comes from Tasmania’s best stud.
It is interesting the Mystic Journey, Pateena Arena, Our Long Sali and Vivilici were out of mares from well performed Armidale Stud families as is this filly.
This filly looks like a runner and an early type and I expect her to be a potential star in the Tasmanian 2YO races next season. She was in my opinion the best filly in the sale and is one of the few better types to remain in Tasmania to race.
Isn’t Life Strange has already thrown a very good horse in the Tasmanian Magic Millions 2yo Classic winner Le Cadeau who went on to win 8 races and $204,188 in stakes money. I regard this mating as a much better one than the one that produced Le Cadeau. Isn’t Life Strange comes from a great winning family with ‘Black Type’ performers down the page.
This is Isn’t Life Strange’s fourth foal. She has another winner with the 3rd placed. She has a Gold Standard foal and is in foal to Brutal.
The cross with Needs Further over Ladoni mares has been very successful with five winners including Pateena Arena.
I can’t wait for this filly to get to the races. She looks an early goer and is an August foal.
