I was absolutely thrilled for Adam Trinder and his hardworking team when Mystic Journey won the Group 1 Australian Guineas at Flemington yesterday. Adam has done a wonderful job with the filly and congratulations for him being loyal to Anthony Darmanin who produced the ride of his life on the daughter of Needs Further.


Mystic Journey was reared at Armidale Stud in Tasmania which is owned by the Wishaw family. I have been associated with the Wishaw clan for two decades and managed a good filly for them named Vickers which Bill Mitchell trained. They are excellent breeders.


In 2017 I purchased two fillies from Armidale which race as Our Long Sali (by Needs Further) and Golden Script. These are both well performed fillies with Our Long Sali winning the 2018 Tasmanian Magic Millions 2YO Classic as well as being placed 2nd in the Tasmanian Oaks, Strutt Stakes, Tasmanian Guineas and 1000 Guineas.


Golden Script is a Melbourne Metropolitan winner and was placed 2nd in the rich VOBIS Sire.


Behind Mystic Journey, these are the two highest earning fillies sold through 2017 Tasmanian Magic Millions Sale.


I purchased another Needs Further filly at last week's Tasmanian Magic Millions Sale for Adam to train. I wonder what she may have cost if the sale was held this week? Timing is so important in all aspects of racing.


I haven't jumped on the Needs Further band waggon due to his recent success. I was fortunate to purchase Our Long Sali at the 2017 Tasmanian Magic Millions Sale. She is a very good filly and needs no introduction to our owners.


In 2016 which was Needs Further's first crop, I was the under bidder on a filly by the sire. I don't know where she finished up.


Last year I purchased the top priced Needs Further sold through the Tasmanian Magic Millions Sale and she will race under the name of Sali's Sister. She has displayed good ability on the track.


This year I went to the sale to purchase a Needs Further filly and after doing my homework came up with two fillies I liked. There were only nine in the sale. At the end of the day I was very pleased to get Lot 127 out of the good producing mare Why For. The other filly was the top priced Needs Further sold through the sale.


Needs Further is currently placed 4th on the Australian 3rd year sire list behind Pierro, All Too Hard and Your Song but is represented by just 54 runners compared with Pierro's 176 and All Too Hard's 169. Interestingly he has six stakes wins for the season, 2nd only to Pierro on the list with nine. If Mystic Journey wins the All Star Mile her sire will top the 3rd season list and the Australian 3YO List which would be remarkable.


It has taken over 120 years for a Tasmanian trained horse to again win a Group 1 race on the Mainland with Mystic Journey giving every indication she is absolutely top shelf. She may well be the best 3yo in Australia.
