I have been a fan of Needs Further since he first went to stud and I have purchased five fillies and one colt by him over the years.
Needs Further only averages 24 fillies per year so there are very few on offer with a majority home bred which don’t go to the sale. There were only five fillies on offer at this year’s Tasmanian Magic Millions Yearling Sale. This filly was easily the best of these and in my opinion the best filly in the sale.
The cross with Needs Further over the Xaar mare Why For has proven successful producing our good filly Vivilici which Prime Thoroughbreds raced. She won seven races including the important TTC 3YO Cup and was placed 4th in the Listed Elwick Stakes.
Here are the results for fillies from the Tasmanian Magic Millions Yearling sales, 2016 through to 2024.
2016 Tasmanian Magic Millions Sale’s best filly Pateena Arena by Needs Further.
2017 Tasmanian Magic Millions Sale’s best horse Mystic Journey by Needs Further.
2018 Tasmanian Magic Millions Sale’s most winning filly Deroche by Needs Further.
2019 Tasmanian Magic Millions Sale’s equal most winning filly Vivilici by Needs Further.
2020 Tasmanian Magic Millions Sale’s best filly Our Heidi by Needs Further.
2021 Tasmanian Magic Millions Sale’s best filly Vokes by Needs Further.
2022 Tasmanian Magic Millions Sale’s 2nd highest earning filly Bine by Needs Further.
2024 Tasmanian Magic Millions highest earning horse Zany Girl by Needs Further.
These results tell a great story. Vivilici and Bine were syndicated by Prime Thoroughbreds.
Needs Further
Needs Further has a terrific pedigree and was a good racehorse. He is by Champion Sire Encosta de Lago out of the Danehill mare Crowned Glory which was 2nd in the Golden Slipper Stakes. Needs Further is a ½ brother to the Group 1 winner Hallowed Crown and Mornington Glory which was 3rd in the 2024 Group 1 MRC Oakleigh Plate. Needs Further’s 2nd dam is by Champion sire Bletchingly. His 3rd dam is the dam of super sire Zabeel. He was bred at Gooree Stud which is the most successful sire producing stud in Australia.
Prime Thoroughbreds and Needs Further
Since 2017 I have purchased six yearlings by Needs Further with five going on to win races. Here is a detailed summary of their performances each year. I didn’t purchase any yearlings in 2021 or 23 from the Tasmanian Yearling Sale. I couldn’t find any yearlings to fit my criteria in those years.
In summary the six progeny I have raced by Needs Further were purchased for $302,000. They have won 20 races and returned $815,950 in prizemoney and sales receipts with Bine and Zany Girl still in our racing team.
2017
The first Needs Further I secured was Our Long Sali from the 2017 Tasmanian Magic Millions Yearling Sale from Armidale Stud. She was a beautiful yearling with her being knocked down to me for $32,000. She went on to win the Tasmanian Magic Millions 2yo Classic in 2018 trained by Stuart Gandy. Under Stuart’s care the filly won three of her six starts and was a gallant 6th in the Group 3 SA Sire’s Produce Stakes beaten just 1.8 lengths.
As a 3yo she was placed second in the Listed Tasmanian Guineas, Tasmanian 1000 Guineas, Listed Tasmanian Strutt Stakes and Listed Tasmanian Oaks in consecutive races. These are four of Tasmania’s biggest 3yo races. As a 4yo she ran second in the Lady Lynette and 4th in the Tasmanian 3 and 4yo Magic Millions Classic. She was a very good filly racing against and being competitive with horses of the calibre of Mystic Journey and The Inevitable. She won $180,563 on the track and was sold for $65,000 as the completion of her racing career.
Our Long Sali was the second best performed filly or mare to come out of the 2017 Magic Millions Yearling Sale after the Champion filly Mystic Journey, also by Needs Further who was a Group 1 winner of $4,182,100.
2018
I purchased Our Long Sali’s full sister at the 2018 Tasmanian Magic Millions Yearling Sale but while she was a beautiful filly was very limited and failed to win a race.
2019
The next filly I purchased by Needs Further was Vivilici from the 2019 Magic Millions Yearling Sale. Her best win was in the Tasmanian 3YO Trophy. She was purchased from Armidale Stud’s draft at the Tasmanian Magic Millions Sale for $35,000 and is the equal most winning filly or mare to come from the sale.
Vivilici was a great mare for her owners winning seven races and $173,322 in stakes money. She is now at stud.
2020
I purchased two colts at the 2020 Tasmanian Magic Millions Sale from the Armidale Stud draft with Needs Remembering being by Needs Further and won two races. While he was no star, he had some ability. He cost $55,000 and has returned $78,155 in stakes money.
The other colt I purchased from this sale was the Tasmanian Derby winner The Nephew who cost $40,000 and has returned $362,360 with six wins to his credit. He won the Listed Tasmanian Derby and is the second highest earning horse to come out of the sale. He was by Wordsmith.
2022
In 2022 I purchased Bine from the Magic Millions Horses In Training Sale for $20,000. She had been sold earlier in the year at the 2022 Tasmanian Magic Millions Yearling Sale but was then resold. She is a nice mare with four wins and $137,785 in stakes earnings. She is still in our racing team.
2024
In 2024 I purchased Zany Lady for $65,000. She is the highest earning yearling to come out of the Tasmanian Magic Millions Yearling Sale that year. She has won three races and $172,050 prizemoney including the Listed Elwick Stakes from just five starts. She was also placed 2nd in the Tasmanian Magic Millions 2YO Classic and 3rd in the Listed Gold Sovereign Stakes.
2025
I’m thrilled to have purchased this filly by Needs Further from why For from the Armidale Stud draft. She looks an early type and comes from Tasmania’s best stud.
This filly looks like a runner and an early type. I expect her to be a potential star in the Tasmanian 2YO races next season. She was in my opinion the best filly in the sale and is one of the few better types to remain in Tasmania to race. At the time of writing only 43 yearlings were purchased by Tasmanians at the sale.
Why For
Why For already thrown three good horses in Speed Force (12 wins), this filly’s full sister Vivilici (7 wins) and Sentimental Dream (six wins). She comes from one of Armidale Stud’s very best families. Why For was placed in the Listed Tasmanian Oaks.
