Purchased for $100,000 (PLUS GST) at the recent Gold Coast Magic Millions sales this outstanding daughter of what would have to be the most exciting sires in recent years in NORTHERN METEOR ticks ALL the boxes and has every chance to make the grade on both the race track and hopefully at stud after a proven race track career has been established. A faultless attitude, comes from a proven winning family (including a champion in ALINGHI) with the added benefit of being SUPER VOBIS/VOBIS GOLD QUALIFIED are compounding reasons to become involved in this lovely athletic filly!
NORTHERN METEOR was an outstanding individual. His racing career extended to just nine starts before his owner deemed him more valuable a stud proposition and sent him to Widden, where he stood his first season in 2009 to overwhelming support from breeders. Trained initially by John Hawkes, NORTHERN METEOR made his debut with a seventh of nine and then an unlucky third, beaten under a length by Geared Up, over 1200m and 1250m at Canterbury, both times on Dead tracks, in August 2008.
When he resumed on October 8,it was with a new trainer,Gai Waterhouse, appointed as the sole mentor for the Gooree home-breds,and the three year old made no mistake in beating Pinwheel by 4.25 lengths in the 1250m Grand Pavillion Handicap (1250m) at Canterbury as the hot favourite and running a course record of 1.12.47.Lining up for the Brian Crowley Stakes-LISTED (1200m) at Randwick 10 days later, the son of Encosta de Lago again impressed racegoers with a sizzling five-length triumph over Geared Up, again running a track record at his first try in stakes company. Northern Meteor destroyed his rivals, running 1.08.32 bettering the previous mark of 1.08.36 set by the brilliant speedster Ab Initio in 1999.In his post-race interview owner Andrew Baddock said “He is something special, the best we have had. He now holds two track records. It is scary the sectionals he can run this colt”
Taken to Melbourne for his sternest test to date, the VRC Ascot Vale Stakes-GROUP 1,NORTHERN METEOR warmed up with an 800m jump out down the Flemington straight on October 28,running 46.5,a second quicker than any other trials that day, including one won by champion sprinter Takeover Target. “He’s a really handsome horse and the speed he finds is just so exciting” Gai Waterhouse said “If he wins on Saturday I’ll tell the owners to turn him out and get ready to take him to England to race. He could be dual hemisphere stallion”. While the trip to England never eventuated, NORTHERN METEOR made no mistake down the straight 1200m against the country’s best three year-old sprinters in the Ascot Vale-GROUP 1 (Coolmore Stud Stakes).Northern Meteor had a half-length to spare from Fist Of Fury on the line, running 1.10.51 with All American third and Von Costa de Hero fourth, beaten 1.5 lengths and 3.75 lengths by the winner. The winner earned a rating of 104 and prompted his trainer to call him “a machine” in fact she was fond of referring to her favourite colt as a “Ferrari” and there was no doubt he had gears to match that compliment.
Given a break, NORTHERN METEOR resumed on March 7,2009 with a fourth (of 22) behind Scenic Blast, Swiss Ace and Aichi, beaten 1.5 lengths in the VRC Newmarket Handicap-GROUP 1 (1200m),he was sixth behind All Silent in the Canterbury Stakes-GROUP 2 (1300m) on a dead track on March 21 then seventh of 14 (3.1 lengths) behind Vision And Power in the George Ryder Stakes-GROUP 1 (1500m) on a heavy track on April 4 and then ended his career with a brave chase of champion sprinter Takeover Target in the T.J.Smith-GROUP 1 (1200m,dead 1.09.09),beaten 2.75 lengths and with Apache Cat, a further three lengths astern in third,Nicconi fourth, Racing To Win and Bel Mer completing the high class field.
That run marked his final appearance and he retired as the fastest son of champion sire Encosta de Lago to set foot on a racetrack. NORTHERN METEOR joined the roster at Widden Stud “He’s a GROUP 1-winning sprinter by a reigning champion sire from a world renowned stallion producing family and had the sort of freakish natural ability that is rarely seen on a racetrack” Widden’s Antony Thompson said at the time.
NORTHERN METEOR has been absolute sensation to date at stud. He was crowned Champion first crop stallion and is currently the leading second crop stallion by almost $1 million! He is also the sire of Champion 3yo Zoustar who has just been retired to stud at Widden also a la Northern Meteor and is also the sire of GROUP 1 BRC J.J. Atkins Stakes winner Romantic Touch, GROUP 2 winners Bound For Earth and Eurozone and GROUP 3 winner The Voice plus a host of metropolitan winners-all in his short sharp career where his oldest runners are just 3yo’s! In fact research by Widden Stud’s Ryan McEvoy suggests this is the first time a First Season Sire has had a GROUP 1 quinella (via Zoustar AND Romantic Touch who ran first and second in the GROUP 1 J.J. Atkins Stakes) since Dual Choice and Royal Show gave Showdown (GB) the feat in 1970 in the VRC Sires Produce Stakes (now GROUP 2).Showdown, a resident at Stockwell Stud in Victoria, was the Leading First Season Sire for that year and later twice Champion Australian Sire.
The filly comes from a truly outstanding family where the second and third dams have thrown an incredible 13 winners from 13 foals to race and includes the Champion 3yo filly in Australia of 2004-05 in ALINGHI.She was simply outstanding from 900m-1700m and her victories included the VRC Newmarket Hcp-GROUP 1,the MRC Thousand Guineas-GROUP 1,Blue Diamond Stakes-GROUP1,SAJC Swettenham Stud Stakes-GROUP 1 as well as victories in the GROUP 2 VRC Edward Manifold Stakes,Ascot Vale Stakes,STC Reisling Slipper Trial and Saratoga Ballston Spa Handicap. She was indeed the Champion filly of her generation and won $3,559,367 in stakes. She is also from the family of promising Redoute’s Choice stallion BENETEAU,himself a GROUP winner also running 3rd in the MRC Blue Diamond Stakes at GROUP 1 level. An added bonus is that Dehere who is the broodmare sire of the mare Lil Onassis has produced 49 individual stakes winners that include Golden Slipper winner Forensics and Derby winners Rebel Raider and Kidnapped just to name a few. A broodmare stallion that is well and truly proven is Dehere.
This is indeed a wonderful athletic filly that comes from a super winning family, is related to a Champion, has excellent residual value as a Broodmare with the added bonus of being SUPER VOBIS qualified. I am very proud to have this filly come under the United Syndications banner and hope you are too!
