Description

This delightful filly was purchased earlier this year from the Select session of the 2018 New Zealand Bloodstock Karaka Yearling Sale. She’s by the emerging young kiwi stallion ROCK ‘N’ POP, a former $1,000,000 yearling who performed at the highest level winning the stallion making Group 1 2000 Guineas and also running second in the Group 1 NZ Derby too. He stands at the famous Waikato Stud, Cambridge, NZ.

A son of the champion stallion FASTNET ROCK and from the dual Group 1 winning mare POPSY, Rock ‘N’ Pop is already developing into a good producing stallion. From limited opportunities he’s already produced 21 winners, of which 4 are stakes-performers in Australia & New Zealand, including Gold Spice (2nd G3 Sunline Vase), The Lord Mayor (4th G1 NZ Derby), Paris Rock (4th G3 VRC Vanity) and Go Dixie (3rd G3 SC Guineas). He’s also proving to be a truly international quality stallion, with smart winners already coming in Hong Kong and Singapore to this point, again, all of which from just his first 21 winners. This puts Rock ‘N’ Pop in an excellent position to emerge as another leading sire from the country which pound for pound, has dominated the Australian bred middle and staying distance band of racehorses for the past decade.

Both on type and pedigree, this filly looks set to succeed, with her dam’s record to this point outstanding. Haberdashery, a daughter of the great sire PINS, has so far produced five foals to race, with each of them already a multiple winner. The best of those immediate siblings to our filly include the stakes winning SEWREEL, and the $1 million earner Grand Harbour. Sewreel was a winner of 4 races up to 1800m, including an Oaks Prelude in New Zealand at Listed level and was also group 3 placed in Australia, while Grand Harbour has now won 5 races up to 1800m in both New Zealand and Hong Kong and is still racing to add to his impressive $1 million in prizemoney. To round out Haberdashery’s 5 foals to race, throw in the handy Singapore galloper and 3-time winner Toast’s Angel, the 2-time NZ winning filly Sofia Loren and the lightly raced Melbourne city winner Ocean’s Deep, who has won 2 of her first four starts for the Hayes & Debernig yard. This filly only needs to measure up to any of her 5 siblings to be a success.

It’s not hard to see why our filly’s dam Haberdashery has been such a good broodmare, as she’s impeccably bred on both sides of her page. Not only is she by the outstanding broodmare sire PINS as mentioned above, but her dam is the stakes-winner NANCRESS, making her a half-sister to the Group 1 Queensland Derby winner LACHLAN RIVER.
Nancress herself is a half-sister to G1 AJC Oaks winner, MY BRILLIANT STAR, so although most of the success in her immediate pedigree is around the 1200-1800m range, there’s also a degree of stoutness and proof of success over the classic distances in there too. It’s interesting to note that Rock ‘N’ Pop’s best 4 horses to date have all won at a mile or more. So, is this the filly that may get us to an Oaks next season?

From a physical point of view, not only is she a real ‘looker’ as you can see in the photo, but she’s also a nice type everywhere she needs to be, with correct conformation throughout and tending to be more on the racy, speedy side, rather than only a dour looking staying type. This gives us the opportunity to see her perform earlier than a typical staying type filly and hopefully will see her able to show early speed as she begins her career which should position her well for those good races specifically for 3yo fillies.

Already fully broken in, educated and currently in work, she’ll be trained by Grand Syndicates newest addition to it’s training ranks, the G1 winning Jason Warren, from his world class facilities at Denistoun Park at Tuerong, nestled deep in Victoria’s horse country on the Mornington Peninsula. Full 5% shares are priced at $2,200 and include all costs, from her purchase at Karaka in New Zealand, to her transport to Australia, breaking in and all training fees right through to January 1st 2019. From there, Grand Syndicates’ easy, fixed fees apply at $7 a day, all-inclusive and paid quarterly via direct debit. No stress, no worries.
