Jockey Brad Stewart could offer no excuses for the defeat of boom two-year-old filly Frequendly at Doomben on Saturday.
Frequendly had won her first two starts in easy fashion and was backed from $1.45 into $1.35 before finishing third, 4-1/2 lengths behind winner Pepperano ($7.50) in the Capture The Feeling Handicap.
"You know as much as I know. She just didn't fire," Stewart said.
Trainer Les Ross will now review plans to run Frequendly in the Magic Millions Classic on January 10.
Meanwhile, trainer Liam Birchley declared Pepperano would be heading to the race after her all-the-way win.
Pepperano was bred by long-time Birchley client Tony Carroll but is raced by female members of Carroll's family, putting her in contention for a $500,000 Magic Millions bonus if she makes the field.
"She is a nice, big strong filly who has shown us plenty. She earned enough prize money today for us to take our time plotting her Millions campaign,' Birchley said.
It is likely Pepperano will take the traditional path to the Classic through the McLachlan Stakes at the Gold Coast on December 27.
Birchley has had little luck in the Millions with his best performance from seven previous runners in the big race being the unlucky runner-up with Paprika in 2009.
Winning jockey Chris Munce, who has won three Magic Millions Classics, said Pepperano was a perfect horse for the race and should be further improved by the win.
Birchley and Munce got an early double when Royal Jester ($13) won the NRMA Insurance Broncos Plate.
