A quick trip to Sydney has convinced Brisbane trainer Steve O'Dea he is on the right track with leading Villiers Stakes contender Sir Moments.
O'Dea made a flying visit to watch Sir Moments work at Randwick ahead of his Sydney debut in the Listed Festival Stakes (1500m) at Rosehill on Saturday.
The Group Two Villiers (1600m) at Randwick on December 13 has been the long-range plan for Sir Moments since he won the Group Two Queensland Guineas in May.
"He worked on the steeple grass this morning in smart time which showed me he had settled in well," O'Dea said.
"It's his first trip away and we have taken our time with him.
"We decided to give him a decent break after the winter and not to go to Group One races too soon.
"We could have gone to Sydney or Melbourne but he is a tall, leggy horse and still developing.
"He is out of a Zabeel mare and they take time. He is a horse of the future.
"We are testing the waters with the Villiers to see where he fits."
After the Guineas, Sir Moments proved himself over 1600 metres in the Listed Daybreak Lover before he was sent for a spell.
He returned on November 1 with a third over 1350m at Doomben then scored a dominant win over 1400m at the Gold Coast carrying 59kg.
"That was his first win against all-aged horses and the way he did it under the big weight was pleasing," O'Dea said.
"The Gold Coast isn't the easiest track and in the end he was dominant."
Premier Brisbane jockey Tim Bell will make the trip to Sydney to ride the gelding who will carry 56kg in the Festival.
Monton, the winner of the Festival Stakes-Villiers double in 2011, has topweight of 60kg, 1kg more than multiple stakes winner Mouro.
