A chance trip to Adelaide last month has given Victorian apprentice Josh Cartwright thoughts of winning the Adelaide jockeys' premiership.
Apprenticed to Jamie Edwards at Geelong, Cartwright has been riding in Adelaide each Saturday for the past five weeks.
A win aboard Ilgattino for Geelong trainer Kelvin Bourke at Morphettville on November 1 was the catalyst for the 20-year-old notch a further 10 winners.
After a quartet of winners last week, Cartwright now sits in sixth place on the premiership table, just four behind leader Clare Lindop.
While not specifically setting out to land the premiership, he said it would be a feather in the cap.
"It was never a goal to chase the premiership when I first started going over," said Cartwright.
"Even if you run in the first three its something under your belt and no matter where you go you can say you've been competitive in a metropolitan premiership."
After riding at Moonee Valley on Friday night and staying nearby to Melbourne Airport, Cartwright takes an 8am flight to Adelaide and returns on Sunday morning.
He said he was still busy riding in Victoria during the week and plans to continue his schedule.
Cartwright said it was Lloyd Kennewell who enticed him to ride in Adelaide at weekends with his four winners last week coming for four different trainers.
He's certainly in demand and his 2kg claim is also an advantage with Cartwright picking up seven rides at Morphettville on Saturday.
"I've got seven decent rides and while it continues I'll keep flying over," he said.
Cartwright doesn't ride below 56kg and because of his heavy commitments during the week he doesn't want to knock himself around too much by trying to ride lighter.
