Apprentice Jimmy Orman was forced to throw away the script when Mishani Honcho scored a narrow win in Saturday's Iveco Handicap at Doomben.
Mishani Honcho, the $2.80 favourite, was having his first outing in blinkers and missed the start before Orman urged him along to take up a position just behind the leaders.
"Our original plan was to lead but when he came out of the barriers awkwardly I had to go to Plan B," Orman said.
"In the straight he got a bit lost for a few strides so I put the stick away and he went a lot better without it."
Mishani Honcho had a head to spare at the finish from stablemate Mishani Di Caprio ($4.80) with Saga Of The Storm ($4.00) a short neck away third.
Mishani Honcho isn't eligible for next month's Magic Millions and is likely to continue his current campaign.
"With the QTIS bonus these races are worth $66,100 to the winner so we'll try to keep picking up some more of them," trainer Les Ross said.
Liam Birchley's hot streak was momentarily halted when Saga Of The Storm finished third but he was back in the winner's list one race later with Paraggi ($4.40).
The gelding gave Birchley his ninth winner, with three seconds, from his past 16 starters including five straight victories during the week.
