A relationship forged through the sire Alamosa has led to Mick Price picking up another potentionally smart New Zealand galloper.
A Group One winner under Price's care and now a successful sire, Alamosa was owned by New Zealander Bill Gleeson.
Through Gleeson, Ringo has made his way to Price's stable and will have his first run for the stable in The Lola's Gift Handicap (1400m) at Flemington on Saturday.
Prepared in New Zealand by Mike Breslin, Ringo campaigned in Melbourne during the winter and had three starts at Flemington chasing home Akavoroun, The Cleaner and Aeratus.
After being galloped on at his last start on July 19, the decision was made to leave the son of Fastnet Rock with Price and give him a good break.
Price likes Ringo and believes the gelding is in for a good preparation.
"It wouldn't surprise me if he wins but I do think the last 100 metres may be the test," Price said.
"I think he's in for a good prep but he may be a little underdone for this race.
"I'm not saying he can't win but with Spacecraft and Decircles and with 11 runners, if we do ride him cold, I don't think we'll be that far away.
"I think you'll find him working home really well."
Price has no ambitious plans for Ringo at this stage with connections just wanting to get some prize money in the bank.
He doubts the five-year-old to be a weight-for-age horse at this stage but if he starts winning races he'll then deserve his chance in better races.
Price also saddles up first-up Ballarat winner Mighty Like with Price believing the son of Host having the stronger credentials of the pair.
"He's a horse of a certain amount of ability," Price said.
"He's drawn a good gate, he's going to get a good run and he's probably our best chance in the race.
"He's hard-fit but I do think Ringo will be a horse to follow this preparation."
