Tendon injuries can be career-threatening but Red Excitement has responded to treatment and is ready to make his comeback at Rosehill.
Trainer Gerald Ryan had originally intended to bring him back in Saturday's Razor Sharp Stakes at Randwick but delayed his return by a week because of the wet track.
With clear skies forecast for most of the week, the five-year-old will now resume in the 1400m benchmark 95 handicap on his home track on Saturday and will carry around 61kg as the highest rated of the 13 entries.
"Because he's coming back form injury I didn't want him to have a hard run on a wet track so we decided against Randwick," Ryan said.
"He will run on Saturday although as a 99 rater he will get 61 kilos but he's carried that before and won.
"But he needs to kick off somewhere.
"He injured his tendon but he didn't actually bow it and we were able to keep him ticking over.
"He has divided his time between Limitless Lodge and the stable with a routine of the water walker, the treadmill and slow work."
Ryan has resisted the temptation to put a claiming apprentice on Red Excitement with Brenton Avdulla to take the ride.
Before his enforced lay-off, Red Excitement put three wins together last summer to take his record to eight from 25 starts which also include six placings.
A $32,500 yearling, the gelding has earned more than $460,000 prize money.
He has had two barrier trials to get ready for his return over the distance of four of his wins.
"After Saturday, he will probably go to Melbourne because there is not much in Sydney for him," Ryan said.
"There are two 1400 metre races, one at Flemington and one at Caulfield, that he can run in down there."
Among Red Excitement's challengers will be last-start Rosehill winner Burbero and Index Linked who is also coming back from a lengthy break.
