Featured Syndicator: BlueBlood Thoroughbreds

Tuesday 16 December 2014, 1:34pm

With plenty of winners on the board, BlueBlood Thoroughbreds are a syndication company that have had more than their fair share of winners. This week we had the pleasure of speaking with Carol Walsh about her favourite part of running a racing syndicate and who has influenced her career in the industry.

1. When selecting horses for syndication, what specifically do you look for?

We look for quality in a horse which consists of pedigree, clean x-rays and clinicals. The conformation, constitution and general attitude of a horse also play a major part in our selections process. Overall this horse must be an athlete. We believe we have one of the industries strictest selection processes and we have teamed up with International Bloodstock Expert Tony “Tubba” Williams to comb his eye over all of our short listed lots at every sale to help us bring home maybe the next champion of the track.

2. What is your favourite part of running a racing syndicate?

Catching up with the owners on raceday would have to be the most favourite part of running a racing syndicate. Just seeing the excitement in our owner’s eyes when their horse wins is a plus. The horse really becomes part of the family for our owners. This is what racing is about, bringing excitement and developing new participants for the industry.

3. Who has had the biggest influence on your career in the Thoroughbred Industry?

My trainers, bloodstock agent and vets would have the biggest influence on my career as they give me expert advice which enables my business to grow. Especially Tony “Tubba” Williams and Mick Price who both have guided me through the thoroughbred racing maze in the early days when I started the business in 2010.

4. When selecting a trainer, which things do you take into consideration?

I look at the state in which they train from, including suburb or location (definitely city trainer) performance and strike rate. Their overall past seasons history of training and success. We also believe in having one of the best communication levels with our owners in the industry, so in saying all that the trainer must be approachable and allow us to open communication lines and be very transparent in the communication so owners are getting the info straight from the horse’s mouth so to speak.

5. What is your most memorable moment as a syndicator thus far?

Attending big race meetings where horses are running in our silks. We have had Le Mans run on Caulfield Cup day and Berlutti ran at the beginning of this year in the 2yo stakes Blue Diamond Prelude and Preview stakes races. But I still get a  kick out of Saturday racing in town and watching your horse win a race…seeing such joy and excitement in the owner’s faces is the most memorable. It stays with you forever.
