With more time and experience, co-trainer Mathew Ellerton thinks Von Classic Hero has a bright future.
But for now Ellerton said Von Classic Hero was a "dumb bugger" who would learn a lot from his Boxing Day win at Sandown.
Ellerton decided to remove the blinkers from Von Classic Hero and replace that gear with a visor.
The move allowed Von Classic Hero ($15) to show great fight to score a three-quarter-length win from Duke Of Brunswick ($3.70) in the Joe Brown Plate.
Von Classic Hero was having his third start, having thrown away victory on debut at Kilmore before racing erratically when a close-up fourth behind Cool at Sandown on December 10.
Ellerton said Von Classic Hero was startled when the winner ran past him last time.
Although Von Classic Hero still raced greenly, Ellerton said the gelding was much better and with further racing would continue to improve.
"He's still raw and still a year away. He's such a big awkward horse but he's made steady improvement all the way through," Ellerton said.
"He's taking it all in and he's improving and if he pulls up alright we'll press on with him."
Winning jockey Damien Thornton agreed with Ellerton, saying Von Classic Hero was a promising horse.
