This week our team had the absolute pleasure of speaking to vibrant racing personality Peter Morely of Grand Syndicates. Famous for the creation of Grand Syndicates - "where every share's a grand" Peter Morley has helped people throughout Australia get into racehorse ownership.
1. When selecting horses for syndication, what specifically do you look for?
TYPE, type and more type! A horse has to be a capable, potential athlete before he’s anything else. Then, his athletic potential has to be backed up by a pedigree-which is the family’s evidence of success. Finally of course, it then has to be in our price range.
2. What is your favourite part of running a racing syndicate?
It gives me the opportunity to be involved in sport and competition at a high level-and I’d suggest that with a few exceptions (mainly professional footballers and cricketers of which we have a handful in our syndicates), that also applies to our owners too.
3. Who has had the biggest influence on your career in the Thoroughbred Industry?
Without a doubt-it’s my wife Karen, for the simple reason that she’s always been a tower of strength and support and an unwavering believer in my ability to run a business.
4. When selecting a trainer, which things do you take into consideration?
Firstly the ability to train a winner of course, but that has to balance up nicely with a pleasant personality and a willingness to interact with our owners. Their facilities have to be good too-that’s very important for a potential owners perspective.
5. What is your most memorable moment as a syndicator thus far?
The big races of course! For us the Group 1 WA Derby win with Hot Jules in 1997 was very special.
