Williams takes share of premiership lead

Saturday 17 January 2015, 6:43pm

Craig Williams has taken a share of the Melbourne jockeys' premiership lead with a winning double at Flemington.

And a winning treble to reigning champion Darren Weir has taken him to an equal lead in this season's trainers' standings alongside the David Hayes and Tom Dabernig combination.

Williams brought up his winning double on Tonopah, the horse which completed Weir's treble at Saturday's meeting.

Tonopah was only having his second start for Weir and after being sent out a $2 favourite in the Craftsman Handicap (1700m) he went on to score by three-quarters of a length.

"He's a nice horse," Williams said.

The leading jockey had earlier scored aboard Choose from the Lee and Shannon Hope stable.

The double took Williams to 24 wins alongside Damien Oliver at the top of the Melbourne standings.

Weir started the day with Zanteco winning the racing.com Handicap (2500m) and also won with Taiyoo.

Hayes and Dabernig started the meeting with a two-win advantage but were pegged back with their sole winner on the card being talented three-year-old Tashbeeh who is set to head to Dubai for the rich racing carnival.
