Waller after Australia Day Cup honours

Sunday 18 January 2015, 11:24am

Multilateral will step back up to 2400 metres in his attempt to win the final of Sydney's summer staying features, the Australia Day Cup.

The winner of the Tattersall's Cup over the distance, Multilateral finished fourth when he dropped back to the 2000 metres of the Gosford Gold Cup successfully defended by Midsummer Sun.

Multilateral will be one of two runners for Chris Waller in the Listed race at Rosehill on Saturday with Permit joining him as he tries to recapture his form.

Permit finished fourth behind his stablemate in the Tatt's Cup on New Year's Day and has since had a barrier trial.

"Multilateral gets back to 2400 metres which should suit him better than Gosford which he found too short," Waller said.

"The Australia Day Cup is a race which should suit him and also Permit.

"Hugh Bowman rode Permit in the trial and will be on in the race while Glyn Schofield rides Multilateral again."

Permit was a distant last in the Christmas Cup won by stablemate Saigon Tea on a rain-affected track which is not too his liking.

Midsummer Sun will not be among the Australia Day Cup runners with trainer Sam Kavanagh to aim him at the Canberra Cup (2000m) in March.

"He is going out to Wild Oaks for a couple of weeks on the water walker," Kavanagh said.

"We will keep him to the 2000 metres of the Canberra Cup which looks like a nice race for him."

Saturday's Randwick meeting also features the Listed Carrington Stakes which has been moved from its traditional New Year's Day date and extended from 1100 to 1400 metres.
