Featured Syndicator: Australian Bloodstock

Wednesday 21 January 2015, 6:26pm

Australian Bloodstock have an honour role that extends to include a multitude of Group 1 winners, including the 2014 Melbourne Cup winner Protectionist. Australian Bloodstock have a winning recipe that contributes to their extreme success in the racing industry, buying horses that they know will be successful through extensive analysis, the team at Australian Bloodstock focus on horses they know will win for their owners.

1. When selecting horses for syndication, what specifically do you look for?

Our business has two sides to it- the unraced or untried horses makes up about 20% and the tried horses makes up the other 80%

The tried horses we focus on horses with turn of foots and have a huge database of sectional times that gets added up daily and allows us to avoid the slow ones that so many other people seem to buy

On the unraced horses we have copied a “BIOMECHANICS” program that the Basketball and NFL scouts in the US use. Basically if a horse doesn’t have the right physical traits no matter how big its heart it wont be a potential top liner and hence we focus on this area  agreat. Its helped us buy a number of Group horses. With a loyal bunch of clients it also is a big plus that unlike most sydnicators we don’t have to buy horses we think we can syndicate or that are “sexy” which I see so many syndicators doing. At the end of the day people want fast horses but too many people only buy a horse they think they can sell- but ultimately the results tell the tale here. Once we have found a horse that confirmation and biomechanically we LOVE we then use a pedigree analysis system that helps weeding out the “false” horses. For example we are not interested in buying horses out of sires have false records or perhaps might be flavour of the month but have no real substance. We use a lot of statistical modelling and analysis to find that short list.

2. What is your favourite part of running a racing syndicate?

Its definitely the success we have- having a unique model we get a lot of the competition’s clients and to see guys who for years have had no luck with others and then to come to us and get them a Stakes result is a unbelievable feeling. For some of these guys they have put in hundreds of thousands of dollars and never had a winner and then to get them something they have dreamnt about is a special feeling. We are pretty lucky though as we have a “no idiots policy” with our clients as it only takes one person to spoil what can be a unbelievable thrill and because we are very frank and honest we find people appreciate that

3. Who has had the biggest influence on your career in the Thoroughbred Industry?

We have to say our clients- they have been unbelievable supporters . We have had some guys who started out with us from Day 1 and are still with us and without them we couldn’t have achieved what we have done so far

4. When selecting a trainer, which things do you take into consideration?

This is a big one and without doubt its TRUST, if you cant trust the trainer in what they say or what is going on then you will never have any long term success. Obviously they have to be able to train and for mine seeing horses hold and maintain their form is a great indicator of the trainers ability. There are trainers out there who know there stuff but they are only ever given home bred cheap horses or horses with no ability and its very hard for those guys. But if you have a trainer who wants to overcharge or not tell you the full truth its never a long term relationship

5. What is your most memorable moment as a syndicator thus far?

Most people would expect me to say the 2014 Melbourne Cup win of Protectionist and whilst that was a unbelievable feeling for mine it was the Group 1 German Oaks with Salomina and the Group 1 TJ Smith with Master of Design . They were victories that not only where very special but important for us as they were horses we paid absolutely no money for and for them to win some of the biggest races and parlay them into further success financially it was a great thrill. Of course the Melbourne Cup is something very special and will never be forgotten but is something we are determined to repeat
