Alder and Relentless back for more

A farrier with just one horse in work heads to Moonee Valley looking to build on an impressive recent strike rate.

Hobby trainer Tony Alder and Relentless go into the IPrint Handicap (1600m) on Saturday off the back of a win at Sandown 10 days ago.

It was the third win for Relentless from his last five starts which included victory in a similar race over the same trip at Moonee Valley in August.

Alder is kept busy shoeing horses around the Geelong area with large numbers on his books including thoroughbreds, harness horses and ponies.

"I've got 11 polo ponies to do before the end of the day," he said.

Getting back up to 1600m after success over 1200m at Sandown will suit Relentless, but the rise to Saturday class, despite the race being a benchmark 78, does have Alder concerned.

"You just can never be 100 per cent sure with that sort of class when you're running in town, but as far as I'm concerned the horse is going pretty well," Alder said.

"He's had a little bit of physio since his last start but has gone about his work as normal."

Alder takes Relentless, a winner of six of his 30 starts, to the Geelong track two or three times a week but for the majority the gelding spends his time living in a paddock.

He said the six-year-old doesn't require a lot of work as he keeps himself fit in the paddock and described him as a natural sort of athlete.

Relentless has been in Alder's care since entering his stable as a yearling.

"I used to train a little horse called You Little Pearler," Alder said.

"He's a full brother to her and I had him in the stable as a yearling."

Patrick Moloney, who claims 2kg, takes the ride on Saturday and has been aboard the gelding at his past two wins.

Relentless is currently on the third line of betting at $6 in early markets.
