Winston Churchill wins on anniversary

Sunday 25 January 2015, 8:43am

A horse named Winston Churchill appropriately won a race at Uttoxeter on the 50th anniversary of the former prime minister's death.

Trained in Gloucestershire by Sophie Leech, the nine-year-old was sent off a 3-1 chance in a five-runner steeplechase.

Leech admitted it was no coincidence Winston Churchill was running on the same day as the great statesman's death.

"His owner, Geoff Thompson, is a massive Sir Winston Churchill fan and has loads of memorabilia," Leech said.

"He wanted to try to get the horse to win on this day, so it's a race we pinpointed for quite some time.

"There were a couple of other options for him this week, but everything panned out to perfection."
