Jockey says Derby favourite will stay

Sunday 25 January 2015, 5:57pm

Jockey Matt Cameron has no fears Volkstok'n'barrell will stay the 2400 metres of the New Zealand Derby after another win at Ellerslie.

Volkstok'n'barrell added the $100,000 Karaka Mile on Sunday to his growing list of victories, extending his record to five wins from six starts, the wins all coming in succession.

The gelding is from the first crop of Tavistock whose best performances were at 1400m. He is out of a mare by renowned sprinting sire Volksraad.

Normally this might raise question marks about a horse's ability to stay 2400m in the Derby, for which Volkstok'n'barrell is currently favourite.

But Cameron said there would be no problem.

"As soon as that pressure comes on he loves it, he just thrives on it," Cameron said.

"The extra distance ain't going to worry him whatsoever."

The pace was slow in the six-horse field and the favourite was attacked quickly at the top of the straight by Rockfast.

Volkstok'n'barrell responded while Rockfast ran out under pressure with the winning margin a length and three-quarters.

Co-trainer Donna Logan said Volkstok'n'barrell would run next in the Avondale Guineas on February 14 as his final lead-up for the Derby two weeks later.
