O'Shea adds Memorial to Rosehill entries

Tuesday 3 February 2015, 4:30pm

Godolphin filly Memorial is back in the running to start her autumn campaign in the Eskimo Prince Stakes after trainer John O'Shea made her a late entry for the Group Three sprint.

O'Shea doubled Godolphin's hand in the $150,000 race at Rosehill on Saturday when nominations were extended until Tuesday.

He included Memorial as an additional entry with the talented filly joining stablemate Meursault among 11 final nominations.

Memorial was expected to resume in the Light Fingers Stakes at Randwick on Saturday week and Tuesday's decision is in keeping with O'Shea's original plans.

Godolphin racing manager Jason Walsh said Saturday's race had always been picked out as a potential autumn starting point for Memorial.

"We had her pencilled in for the Eskimo Prince a couple of weeks ago and then we changed our mind to go to the Light Fingers," Walsh said.

"The race was definitely on the radar and John has put her in on the basis of the strength of the nominations and he will make a firmer decision later in the week."

Memorial rated among Godolphin's better two-year-olds last season but her spring campaign was cut short after two runs.

"She wasn't holding her condition and John wasn't happy with the way she was doing in the stable," Walsh said.

"For that reason, rather than push on to the Flight (Stakes) and races like that we decided to give her a good, lengthy spell."

Her extended break from racing seems to have worked because she went to the line under a hold in a Warwick Farm barrier trial last week, beating last year's Golden Slipper winner Mossfun as well as fellow Eskimo Prince entries Kermadec and Delectation.

Meursault also holds a nomination for a benchmark race at Canterbury on Friday night.

The colt is highly regarded but he was beaten as an odds-on favourite at Randwick at his most recent start.

"Wherever John does decide to run him you would probably need to forgive him that last run," Walsh said.
