Extra incentive for Bayliss in Hobart Cup

Thursday 5 February 2015, 5:50pm

The chance to ride in a Group race for the first time in the Hobart Cup is exciting enough for apprentice Jake Bayliss.

But adding to the occasion will be the fact his father Jamie will also be among his rivals in the Group Three race on Monday.

He has the ride on the Robbie Laing-trained Falamonte in the $225,000 staying race while Jamie Bayliss is on Jakcorijim for trainer Glenn Stevenson, with both horses at double-figure odds.

Bayliss and his younger brother Regan are apprentices in Melbourne while their father Jamie made a return to race riding last year after two decades out of the saddle.

"I didn't think I would be race riding against him, let alone now having a Group ride in the same race," Jake Bayliss said.

"That's another big privilege."

Bayliss has ridden in the same races as his Dad during the past nine months, including one race he won last May at Cranbourne which featured both Regan and Jamie.

Apprenticed to Cranbourne trainer Mick Kent, Bayliss has never ridden Falamonte in a race but has ridden seven winners from 51 rides for Cranbourne-based Laing.

Falamonte, the Tony McEvoy-trained Pelicano and the Mike Moroney-trained Garud are the interstate runners in the 13-horse field.

Falamonte was fourth at Flemington last start and has drawn barrier four.

"She's going to settle in the first five so barrier four is a golden gate for us and I think she'll really run a race with 54 kilos on her back," he said.

Bayliss has ridden in three Listed races in Victoria but has not ridden in a Group race.

He will also ride two-year-old Gee Gees Jet on debut in the Listed Elwick Stakes.
