Paceman can work as well as any two-year-old Peter Snowden has nurtured but the unbeaten youngster still has to prove himself to the trainer in the Silver Slipper Stakes at Rosehill.
In the absence of the Gai Waterhouse-trained star Vancouver, Paceman is one of six unbeaten juveniles among eight acceptors on Saturday in a race that will reshape betting on next month's Golden Slipper.
Snowden has not trained a Silver Slipper winner but he was John Hawkes' right-hand man when Crown Lodge won the Group Two race in 2005, 2006 and 2007 and knows the importance of it as a lead-up to the Golden Slipper.
"We'll know a lot more after Saturday whether the (Golden) Slipper will fit and where the pecking order will be later on," Snowden said.
For Paceman to make another Golden Slipper statement after looking above average in winning over 1100m at Rosehill in November, he will have to overcome a wide barrier after drawing gate seven.
He will also have to show Snowden he is capable of turning his trackwork brilliance into a serious raceday result.
"What I have learnt before is what they do at home means nothing," Snowden said.
"It's raceday that counts. I am a great believer in a horse having to do things twice."
Vancouver, winner of the Breeders' Plate and Canonbury Stakes, is expected to be saved for a barrier trial before having his Golden Slipper lead-up run in the Todman Stakes at Randwick on March 7.
There were no surprise omissions at acceptance time for the Hobartville Stakes with the favourites for the Doncaster Mile and the ATC Australian Derby among a field of 13.
The Snowden-trained Doncaster Mile favourite Shooting To Win will launch his autumn campaign from gate 10 while the Victoria Derby winner Preferment makes his return from barrier seven for trainer Chris Waller.
Preferment is the $5 popular elect for the Australian Derby while three other Hobartville acceptors - Sweynesse, Hampton Court and Kermadec - are also prominent in early betting on the three-year-old Classic.
Impressive mare Catkins will have seven rivals in the Millie Fox Stakes while a capacity field which includes six acceptors for Waller has been drawn for the Parramatta Cup.
