Winks to ride Deep Field in G1 Lightning

Wednesday 18 February 2015, 4:46pm

James Winks has been given a gilt-edged Group One chance on unbeaten sprinter Deep Field in the Lightning Stakes at Flemington.

Winks was called up for the ride in Saturday's Group One race after the sprinter's regular jockey Dwayne Dunn failed to get a careless riding ban reduced on appeal on Wednesday.

Dunn is disappointed to miss Deep Field's first Group One run as he believes the exciting sprinter will continue his winning streak on Saturday.

"Deep Field is a superstar and could potentially go on to do anything, so it's unfortunate to miss the ride through suspension," Dunn said.

"I think he should be just winning.

"Obviously he's got to go to this level but he's shown us he's more than capable of being Group One class. Hopefully on Saturday he ticks that box."

Winks is no stranger to Group One success and was also the go-to man for Hawkes Racing's exciting two-year-old colt Headwater when he won on debut in December.

The jockey will be chasing his first Group One since Star Witness won the 2010 Coolmore Stud Stakes triumph.

"Obviously I'm excited to ride him and now it's just a matter of going out there and doing the right thing and getting the job done," Winks said.

"There's no denying that it's a great opportunity but it's nothing really new. I've won four Group Ones, one in Hong Kong, and nearly won the Victoria Derby last year so it's not as though it's just something that springs up.

"It's obviously great to be given the opportunity by Team Hawkes and the owners to put me on such a valuable colt. Now the main aim is just to go out there and do the job and hopefully it's first past the post."

The valuable stallion prospect's opposition includes reigning Australian Horse of the Year Lankan Rupee who shades him for favouritism with the TAB at $2.30 compared to $2.40 in the six-horse field.

Coolmore Stud Stakes-winning three-year-old Brazen Beau is the only other runner under double figures at $5.50.

Winks rode a rival horse against Deep Field in a Flemington jump-out last Friday and said the sprinter looked "pretty awesome", winning the heat by about four lengths.
