Shooting To Win out to enhance reputation

Caulfield Guineas winner Shooting To Win has figured in a heavier workload in preparation for an autumn campaign that could make him Australia's dominant sprinter-miler.

Shooting To Win resumes in Saturday's Hobartville Stakes (1400m) at Rosehill with co-trainer Peter Snowden expecting him to be much closer to his best than he was before the start of a spring campaign.

It's been a regime tailored to accommodate Shooting To Win's growth spurt during a spell and Snowden's desire to protect the three-year-old's reputation as one of Australia's most valuable colts.

"It took three solid runs (in the spring) for him to get there but I think I've got him a lot fitter than what I had him last time so I'm hoping he can peak for his second run," Snowden said.

"He's got a profile now so I've got to be mindful of that every time he steps out.

"He's had two trials and the second trial was a good solid trial and a couple of good gallops since then with a fair bit of beach work so I'm pretty confident he will perform well on Saturday."

As a Caulfield Guineas winner and a brother to the Lightning Stakes favourite Deep Field, Shooting To Win is assured of a future as a stallion.

But his value will soar if he can can land another significant win during a campaign that will include three Group One targets - the Randwick Guineas, George Ryder Stakes and Doncaster Mile.

Shooting To Win holds a close call on Hobartville favouritism in a race bookmakers say has attracted minimal pre-post interest.

"Punters are having a difficult time sorting it out and I think it is because horses in the market like Shooting To Win and Hallowed Crown are resuming," the TAB's Glenn Munsie said.

Among the outsiders which are also first-up is Gai Waterhouse's Spring Champion Stakes winner Hampton Court.

And like the favourite, Hampton Court won't be giving away too much in fitness.

"He's had plenty of work and plenty of exhibition gallops," Tulloch Lodge spokesman Mark Newnham said.

The Victoria Derby winner Preferment also resumes as the least-fancied runner of a Chris Waller representation that also includes Delectation and Kermadec.
