The Country Championship Series beckons for the Nick Olive-trained The Waco Kid if he steps up at Goulburn.
Tuesday's meeting is an important stepping stone for the lightly raced four-year-old who runs in the Goulburn Radio Class 3 Hcp (1400m) with apprentice Brody Loy in the saddle.
Long before the Bite The Bullet gelding resumed from a 108-day spell last start, Olive and part-owner Michael Paul had mapped out a plan to have The Waco Kid firing on all cylinders heading towards the $100,000 SERA Country Championship Qualifier (1400m) at Goulburn on March 20.
"The Country Championships has been the plan all along," Olive said.
"He probably has to win another race to ensure he gets in but I think he can do that tomorrow.
"If he can't win that or at least run very well he shouldn't be in The Championships.
"I think he will win and prove himself a genuine chance in a couple of weeks."
First and second in the qualifying events run at seven different tracks across the state, make it into the $300,000 Country Championship Final (1400m) at Randwick on April 11.
Paul, originally from Tamworth before moving to Canberra for business, bred The Waco Kid from his mare Fillatte who is by Tobougg.
The gelding has recorded two wins and two placings from eight starts but his trainer says that record could be better but for his get-back racing style.
"Because of his racing style he's probably cost himself another three wins," Olive said.
"One break goes his way and he wins those races. His form doesn't read as well as he's going."
