Mick Price has nominated The Chairman for a Group Two race at Caulfield but confirmed the colt would head to Sandown on Wednesday to try to win a maiden instead.
Price believes The Chairman has a future as a stayer but admits the colt by High Chaparral still has a lot to learn.
The three-year-old warmed up late to finish fourth on debut at Geelong then wasn't a factor at Ballarat last start when he finished in the second half of the field.
Price applied winkers to the colt in a jumpout last week in a bid to prompt him to take up a more forward position in the run.
The Chairman will sport that gear change in Wednesday's The Grand Hotel Frankston Plate.
"The 1800-metres will be good for him and the outside barrier won't be a problem for him because he'll have plenty of time to roll across," Price said.
"He's still a work in progress. He should go well and he gets his chance."
Price said he nominated The Chairman for Saturday's Autumn Classic to keep his options open but felt that race would be too tough at this stage of the horse's career.
"I just wanted to put him in and have a look at the race but I'm ducking for cover," Price said.
The Autumn Classic has 18 nominations including the Price-trained Moonovermanhattan.
Price expects his Moonee Valley Vase winner to make his presence felt in Saturday's 1800-metre race and again when he backs up in the Group One Australian Guineas on Saturday week.
"He goes into the 1800 (on Saturday) and then drops back into the Australian Guineas. He'll give a really good account of himself on Saturday," Price said.
Price has two runners at Sandown and believes Ready To Fight will be hard to beat first-up in the Race-Tech Plate (1000m).
