Having recently broken through for his first Doomben win, My Quilter heads back to the track to try to cap his comeback from injury with a Listed victory.
My Quilter was retired after injuring a suspensory ligament but recovered so well, trainer Stewart Mackinnon and owner Ian McCaulay decided to give him another chance on the racetrack.
He lines up in stakes company for the first time in Saturday's $100,000 Listed Tattersalls Members Cup (1600m).
"My Quilter was retired to a paddock at owner Ian McAuley's property and after five months of retirement he looked so good we put him back in work," Mackinnon said.
"We took it slowly with him with a lot of swimming and water walker exercise. That was the key, time. I still don't gallop him much but he has residual fitness on his side," Mackinnon said.
"He has missed getting a prize money cheque just once in his past eight starts."
Mackinnon gives My Quilter a genuine chance in Saturday's Cup especially after the gelding broke his Doomben maiden by winning his last start.
Until his win on February 7, My Quilter had never won in 18 previous starts at Doomben although he had run seven seconds.
He had also never won previously in 10 attempts at 1600m but had run four minor placings.
"He had run seven seconds there so he wasn't exactly a Doomben duffer. He should be up on the pace on Saturday and that will suit him," McKinnon said.
Jason Taylor will take over from apprentice Sairyn Fawke on My Quilter who will start from gate 10 of 14.
"My Quilter has drawn off the track but Jason has the experience to overcome the barrier," Mackinnon said.
The seven-year-old was at $12 on Friday with Black Jet the TAB's $3.50 favourite following his last-start win over 1640m Class Six race at Doomben on February 14.
