A top ride from jockey Michael Cahill helped trainer Robert Heathcote end a losing run when Excellantes won the Listed Falvelon Quality at Doomben on Saturday.
Excellantes ($5) posted his 11th win and his sixth at Doomben when he came from barrier nine to beat the favourite Architect ($3.80) by a head.
Sydney galloper The Peak ($8) was 1-3/4 lengths back in third place after being last early.
Heathcote has had little luck in recent weeks and thought it might continue when Excellantes drew wide.
However, Cahill was able to get across to the fence and he gave Excellantes the run of the race.
But Heathcote isn't getting too excited about Excellantes which will be kept in work for Group Three and Listed sprints during the winter carnival.
"Excellantes is a good honest horse but he is not up to Group One or Group Two races," Heathcote said.
"We will look at things like the Healy Stakes and Lightning Stakes for him in the winter.
"The stable has been going through a trough and I thought we would stay there when we drew barrier nine. But Michael produced a classic ride and that was the difference."
Meanwhile, boom filly Pienkna will undergo a total veterinary inspection after she failed in the Hardy Brothers Jewellers Handicap (1110m).
Pienkna ($2.05) engaged in a speed battle before finishing ninth - beaten nearly five lengths - in a race won by the promising Code Noir ($8).
"She is a lot better than that and she had won two jump-outs in good style," trainer Tony Gollan said.
"She did the same thing at her previous start and we thought we had found the problem with her. Maybe we haven't."
