If a race could have ever been run to suit, Saturday was that race. The ever so talented Mr J. Abrahams had mapped out the race dynamics to whoever would listen pre-race and there was never a doubt in his mind, I know this because he hasn’t stopped gloating about his predictions since 1:05pm on Saturday!
The two break away leaders, I’m All The Talk and Kencella went hell for leather as soon as the gates flew open and ran sectionals that not even the Usain Bolt of the equine world could contend with. They set themselves up for a two pronged attack from Deep Field, who by all accounts appeared to have the run of the race, and Target In Sight. And it was Target In Sight who proved too strong for the talented Group 2 winner. Pre-race, it seemed the masses were afraid of Deep Field with very few wanting to back against him. The bookies held him at a solid $1.90 for most of the day, while most of the field drifted. Someone obviously forgot to pass that memo on to our man Target as there was not an ounce of fear in his eye as he loomed up to the hot favourite: He came… He saw… He Conquered… Target In Sight ‘The Giant Killer’.
Now on the finish line, I could not tell you who had a bigger smile on their face; J. Abrahams who just pulled of an exceptional display of pre-race predicting or the Kiwi wiz kid J. Macdonald, who had just come up trumps on an old acquaintance. Needless to say it was a good day all round and we have our stable veteran and his hotshot trainer to thank!
Congratulations to all connections!
