NZ Derby winner freshened for G1 Guineas

Thursday 19 March 2015, 3:57pm

Astute New Zealand trainer Murray Baker's latest attempt to plunder Australia's classic races begins on Saturday when Mongolian Khan takes on a small but select field in the Rosehill Guineas.

However, it's the ATC Australian Derby two weeks later at Randwick where Baker expects Mongolian Khan has his best chance to shine in Sydney during the autumn.

Mongolian Khan provided Baker with his first New Zealand Derby success when he prevailed in a thrilling contest against Volkstok'n'barrell at Ellerslie last month.

The two New Zealand three-year-olds clash again on Saturday in a race which also includes dual Group One winner Hallowed Crown and Godolphin's Sweynesse.

Baker has enjoyed success with a number of three-year-olds he has brought across the Tasman including It's A Dundeel, Lion Tamer and Nom Du Jeu who all won classic races in Australia.

He says Mongolian Khan compares favourably to that group.

"He measures up," Baker said.

"He's a good class horse. He's only been beaten once and he's kept stepping up to the mark.

"It will be interesting to see how he goes."

Nom Du Jeu won the Australian Derby in 2008 while Lion Tamer won the Victorian blue ribband in 2010.

It's A Dundeel was the star staying colt of his generation winning the Spring Champion Stakes and the Sydney three-year-old triple crown in the 2012-13 racing season.

Mongolian Khan's six wins include the Waikato Guineas (2000m) and Avondale Guineas (2100m) before his Derby triumph.

The horse arrived in Sydney last Monday week and Baker said he had settled in well.

"It's a very good field. We're just hoping he can run a good race fresh," Baker said.

"He's a good stayer. I don't know whether he'll be good enough to win (on Saturday) but I think he'll run an honest race."

Mongolian Khan and the Donna Logan-trained Volkstok'n'barrell are at $4.60 with Hallowed Crown at $2.90 just shading Sweynesse ($3.10) for favouritism.

The seven-horse field also includes Spring Champion Stakes winner Hampton Court and Victoria Derby winner Preferment as well as outsider Pounamu.

Mongolian Khan is favourite for the Australian Derby (2400m) and Baker expects his peak Sydney performance to come in that race.
