Imported mare Noble Protector has added a second Group victory in Australia to her resume in the Sunline Stakes and will now chase a Group One win in Sydney.
The Robert Smerdon-trained mare backed up an impressive first-up Group Three Matron Stakes win at Flemington with a convincing two-length win in Friday night's Group Two Sunline Stakes (1600m) at Moonee Valley.
Having just her fourth start in Australia, odds-on favourite Noble Protector ($1.40) bounced to the front from the inside barrier and controlled the race from there, going on to defeat Girl In Flight with a head to Marianne in third.
Connections will pay a late entry fee for her to run in the Group One Queen Of The Turf Stakes (1600m) at Randwick during The Championships on April 11.
"All being well, we're off to our main aim in Sydney in two weeks," Smerdon said.
"She's in good shape, we've just got to keep her together, keep her ticking over and get her there as well as she was tonight and I'm sure she's going to be very competitive."
