A weight turnaround wasn't enough for Duplicity Jones to turn the tables on Jileks Spur in the second heat of the Macktow Marathon Series at Mornington.
Jileks Spur had the better of Duplicity Jones in the first heat over 3000m at Sandown on March 18 and despite a 2kg swing in the weights was again successful, this time over 3400m.
The pair could again meet in the final heat over 4000m at Sandown on April 15.
Michelle Payne gave Jileks Spur ($4.60) a perfect run behind Duplicity Jones, the $2.40 favourite, before scoring by a half-neck.
Ciaron Maher's racing manager Ben Connolly said Jileks Spur would next start in the 4000m final before embarking on a jumping career.
"Ciaron's got him qualified for the hurdles and he schooled over jumps at Caulfield on Thursday in preparing for this," Connolly said.
Payne said she left her run for as long as possible to claim victory, saying it had been a fight at Sandown.
"It was nice to get there in the last 100 metres today," Payne said.
Duplicity Jones' trainer Cindy Alderson said the gelding would head to Sandown, providing he comes through Saturday's race well.
"Hopefully this time we'll be a little closer together in the weights, which may swing things in our favour," she said.
