Under The Louvre wins Hareeba Stakes

Saturday 28 March 2015, 6:31pm

Oakleigh Plate runner-up Under The Louvre stamped his authority over his Hareeba Stakes rivals, winning the Listed race at Mornington with a fast finish.

Under The Louvre was sent out the $2.15 favourite in the 1100m race after his close second to stablemate Shamal Wind in Group One company at his most recent start.

After settling back in the field, jockey Mark Zahra got Under The Louvre going before the home turn and quickly rounded the field before unleashing a powerful sprint down the outside in the straight to win by 1-3/4 lengths.

Scarlett Billows ($15) hit the line well for second, half a length ahead of Magnus Lad ($41).

Next Saturday's Group Three Victoria Handicap (1400m) is next on the radar for Under The Louvre, with the Group One Goodwood in Adelaide also in trainer Robert Smerdon's sights.

Smerdon was impressed by the way the four-year-old put the race away.

"He didn't step that well, but that's his pattern to sit off and then join in," Smerdon said.

"Even when he was well off them on the corner you had the feeling that he would keep coming and had them covered."

Zahra was taken by how quickly Under The Louvre improved when he asked him to make ground on the leaders and said the horse was electrifying late.

"That was a really big win," Zahra said.

Smerdon and Zahra were among many at the track sending their best wishes to jockey Jack Hill, who's in a Melbourne hospital with injuries suffered in a race fall at Donald on Friday.

He was taken to hospital in a critical but stable condition and was undergoing further scans on his head on Saturday afternoon.

Hill has won four races on Under The Louvre after riding the horse in its first nine starts.
