Group One winner Bel Sprinter will be given one more chance to postpone his retirement.
The gelding was second last in Friday night's Group One William Reid Stakes at Moonee Valley after finishing midfield in the Oakleigh Plate under top weight of 58kg.
"If he doesn't fire at his next start we'll retire him," trainer Jason Warren said.
"He's done a great job.
"We'll give him one more run just because he's come through Friday night's race sound and well."
Warren plans to start the rising eight-year-old in the Listed Anniversary Vase at Caulfield over 1400m on April 18.
The trainer had hoped for a big performance from Bel Sprinter on Friday night which might have earned the gelding another invitation to run in the KrisFlyer International Sprint in Singapore in May.
Bel Sprinter finished second in the 2013 KrisFlyer won by Hong Kong's Lucky Nine who later that year ran a close second to Buffering in the Manikato Stakes.
Bel Sprinter, whose most recent win was a dead-heat with Miracles Of Life in the Group Two Caulfield Sprint in the spring, failed to make an impression in the 1200m weight-for-age race after getting back in the field.
Warren said Bel Sprinter would have an equestrian lifestyle once he is retired.
The Anniversary Vase will be the first time Bel Sprinter has raced beyond 1200m in a 29 start career which has so far netted eight wins, including the 2013 Group One Galaxy, and more than $1 million prize money.
