Helen Page has put her faith in Queensland apprentice Luke Tarrant to upstage some of the best riders in the world when he partners Rudy in the $3 million Doncaster Mile on Saturday.
Tarrant will share the Randwick jockeys' room with star Hong Kong duo Joao Moreira and Zac Purton, the Singapore-based Corey Brown along with top Australian riders Damien Oliver, James McDonald and Craig Williams.
The youngster doesn't have the profile of his peers but he is accomplished in his own right and leads the Brisbane jockeys' premiership.
More importantly for Page, Tarrant has ridden Rudy at his past six starts for two wins and two seconds including a Group Two Villiers Stakes victory in December.
The horse has finished unplaced at his two most recent runs but Page does not hold Tarrant accountable for Rudy's performances in the Ajax Stakes and Doncaster Mile Prelude.
And the Gold Coast trainer has full confidence in the apprentice to get the job done in Australia's top mile race.
"I hear all the talk about champion jockeys but we have wanted the one jockey to ride this horse the whole campaign," Page said.
"I have had the experience of coming to Sydney with horses and a jockey will ride them one day and then switch to something else the very next.
"He has done nothing wrong and he handles the horse well."
While four rival jockeys have been given permission to ride their mounts overweight, Tarrant will have no trouble partnering Rudy at his race weight of 50kg.
The four-year-old will bid to break a 40-year drought for Queensland-trained horses in the Doncaster Mile with none successful since the Jim Atkins-trained Dalrello in 1975.
Gold Coast-based Page is growing in confidence that Rudy can break the hoodoo and says circumstances have been against the horse at his past two starts in Sydney.
"At last we have a few things in our favour and not a few things against us going into a race," she said.
"We have had this race in mind for a long time and things fell into place when he escaped the ballot by winning the Villiers.
"He will give Queensland a great shot at winning the Doncaster again."
