Two French imports making their Australian debut add intrigue to Saturday's Victoria Handicap at Caulfield.
Irish-bred Gallante is a Group One winner in France and is entered to have his first start for owner Lloyd Williams and his son Nick.
Gallante won the Group One Grand Prix de Paris over 2400m last July at big odds on rain-affected ground before finishing sixth in the Prix Niel, a lead-up to the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe which featured Cox Plate winner Adelaide.
He has since joined the Williams' Macedon Lodge team trained by Robert Hickmott and is a $14 chance to make a winning start to his Australian career.
A son of Montjeu, Gallante has not raced at a distance shorter than 1600m in a six-start starts which has netted three wins and two minor placings.
He is the latest import for the Williams team to step out in Australia and they also have 2012 Melbourne Cup winner Green Moon and fellow import The United States down to resume in the race.
Five-year-old The United States opened at $18 but has tightened to $10.
Observational and Carlo Bugatti are imports to have won for the stable in recent weeks at Bendigo and Mornington respectively.
Another French import Calvin Williams is also set to make his first appearance for trainer Darren Weir and is at $18.
Calvin Williams raced 19 times in France for seven wins including two Listed wins last year over 2000m and 1800m respectively.
He has won over as short as 1200m as a two-year-old but Weir said a wide barrier on Saturday would not help the grey horse's cause.
"He's a high-rated horse that is going to be tricky to place but he's got good ability. Barrier 17 at Caulfield is not ideal though," Weir said.
