The decision to bring Miss Cover Girl to Sydney has paid off with a Group Three win for Brisbane trainer Kelly Schweida, even though the race was run completely differently from the way he envisaged.
After watching the first four races at Randwick on Monday, Schweida and jockey Glen Boss thought her chances on the heavy track may not be best served by her normal get-back pattern.
Boss took the PJ Bell Stakes (1200m) into his own hands, taking the $10 chance to the front with the $3 favourite Peeping tracking Miss Cover Girl all the way.
Peeping tried hard but fell short by a head on the post.
"I was surprised when she led," Schweida said.
"But Glen and I discussed that it seemed hard to come from back in the field like she usually does.
"The idea of bringing her here was to get some black type and also to find out where she sits heading to the winter carnival in Brisbane.
"If she had been beaten we would have been looking at the wet track as an excuse but she is much better on the dry so now she has added another dimension.
"I think she can be a Guineas horse over 1600 metres.
"I think she is good enough and she beat some good fillies today."
Boss said he was surprised by how easily Miss Cover Girl led.
"With the pattern of the race today, I didnt see much speed in the race and if she jumped well I was just going to let her control it for me," he said.
"I was surprised that we led. We weren't going super quick.
"She toughed it out and is a winner."
Peeping's rider Sam Clipperton said she tried hard at her first experience in the wet but could not get past the winner.
